Bullets' Ditillo Named Academic All-American
from press release
TOWSON, Md. – Recent Gettysburg College graduate
Nicole Ditillo (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) of the women's lacrosse team
was named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women's At-Large
Second Team for the second year in a row as selected by the College
Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and released on
Thursday, June 10.
Ditillo, tabbed the first Academic All-America in program history
last spring, joins classmate and men's lacrosse senior Timothy
Kurpis (Yorktown, N.Y./Yorktown), who was a first-team at-large
selection in 2010, as the first back-to-back winner since men's
lacrosse's Chase Stewart '06 was tabbed second-team and first-team
in 2005 and 2006, respectively.
If any Bullets student-athlete lived up to that moniker over the
last four years, it was Ditillo, who was a two-time first-team
Academic All-District selection, two-time All-Centennial Conference
pick, and helped the women's lacrosse team reach the semifinals of
the NCAA Division III Tournament three times. In 2010, she was one
of two Bullets to appear in all 22 games and capped the year with
career highs in ground balls (37), draw controls (40), and caused
turnovers (18), while helping the defensive unit rank third in the
nation in goals against average.
Gettysburg finished 2010 with an 18-4 overall record, including 9-0
in conference play, and advanced to the national semifinals.
Ditillo copped honorable mention status from the conference one
year removed from being selected first-team All-CC and first-team
All-Metro Region. Over the last four seasons, Ditillo appeared in
75 games with 60 starts and finished top 20 in school history in
both draw controls (12th, 95) and caused turnovers (T-19th, 54).
She helped Gettysburg to a gaudy record of 68-16, including 33-3 in
conference play.
Off the field, Ditillo was an exemplary student, posting a 3.97 GPA
and graduating with honors in English and psychology. Her list of
academic awards includes being the first recipient of the Janet M.
Riggs '77 Endowed Scholarship, given to a worthy and promising
student majoring in psychology, in addition to being recognized by
the NCAA as the Division III women's lacrosse winner of the Elite
88 award for having the highest GPA at the national
championships.
With her collegiate career in the rear-view mirror, Ditillo will
take her lacrosse stick and knowledge overseas. In August, she will
travel to England where she will teach lacrosse to grade school
children through the English Lacrosse Association. After completing
her time in England, she intends to head back to school to pursue a
master's degree earn her certification to teach English.
