Brockport Shines, Dispatches Rowan, 16-9

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - Senior Melissa Hill (Rochester,
NY/Brighton) scored six goals including two in a key six-goal run
in the first half to lead The College at Brockport Women's Lacrosse
team to a 16-9 victory over Rowan University Wednesday in the first
round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at Brockport. The Golden
Eagles (13-3) advance to play Franklin & Marshall College at
1:30 pm Saturday in the second round matchup at Franklin &
Marshall in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Freshman Sarah Brown (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) scored four of the
first five goals for Brockport as the two teams traded goals early
in the contest. With the scored tied at 2-2 10 minutes into the
contest, the Golden Eagles rattled off six consecutive goals with
Brown scoring twice and Hill added two of her team-high six goals
on the day in the run. The other two goals were scored by Karen
Bianchi (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) and Carly Motondo (Syracuse,
NY/West Genesee).
Each teams scored one more goal before the end of the first half
and Brockport led 9-3 at halftime.
Rowan (11-6) traded goals early in the second half but still
trailed 11-5 with eight minutes elapsed in the second half before
Brockport rattled off four of the next six goals with Hill notching
three of the four goals during the run. Dayna Piraino (Syracuse,
NY/Henninger) scored the other goal in the run and finished with a
team-leading seven points on three goals and four assists. Piraino
assisted on three straight goals in the first half.
Rowan scored twice in the final five minutes to cut the lead to
15-9 but Hill added her sixth goal of the game to seal the victory
and advance the Golden Eagles to the second round of the tournament
in their first-ever appearance in the national tournament.
Piraino and Hill led the team with their seven points each while
Brown chipped in four goals and an assist, Lindsay Cayea (Cicero,
NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) added three assists and Motondo scored
twice.
Junior Jamie Kaminsky (Oakdale, NY/Sayville) made eight saves for
the Golden Eagles.
