After sitting idle for over a week and watching some of the
other top teams fall out of contention, Gettysburg and Franklin
& Marshall reaped the third and fourth seeds in the NCAA
Women’s Division III tournament and earned a regional next
weekend.
The Bullets and Diplomats join Hamilton and Salisbury with byes in
the first round and will host a weekend of action.
The committee threw a curveball by omitting the third place team
from the powerful NESCAC conference, which at times boasted seven
teams in the Top 20, and inserted the runner-up teams from both the
NCAC (Kenyon) and SUNYAC (Brockport) into the last two at-large
spots. Despite a strong finish to the season, Amherst is on the
outside looking in.
In terms of travel, the biggest surprise would be Claremont
(Calif.) earning a home game in the first round against Endicott
while Babson – a team that defeated Claremont during the year
– was shipped off to NESCAC champion Williams.
