Amherst's Horwitz Earns NESCAC's Top Nod
from press release
AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College
sophomore Allie Horwitz (Woodbridge, CT) has been named the NESCAC
Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week, the conference announced
today. Horwitz scored a pair of game-winning goals against
nationally-ranked opponents to help the Lord Jeffs advance to the
NESCAC Championship semifinals.
Horwitz began her week by recording a goal and an assist against
fourth-ranked Trinity College in Amherst’s regular season
finale. After assisting on the final goal of the first half to give
the Jeffs a 3-2 lead, Horwitz put the Jeffs on top for good on a
free-position goal with 5:36 remaining in regulation. The win over
the Bantams secured a quarterfinal home game in the conference
tournament.
Just two days later against ninth-ranked Tufts, Horwitz scored four
goals to lead the Jeffs into the NESCAC Championship semifinals for
the first time since 2008. Three of her goals came in the first
half, including a free-position attempt with only three seconds
remaining on the clock. Horwitz’s FPS goal with 8:57 left in
the second period gave the Jeffs a 5-4 lead and proved to be the
game winner.
Horwitz ranks tied for 15th in the NESCAC in goals scored (28),
while her four game winners are tied for the most in the
conference. After scoring nine goals and assisting on five others
as a first-year, Horwitz has emerged as Amherst’s top scorer
in 2010. This is the first Player of the Week honor of her
collegiate career and the second of the season for Amherst.
Amherst will travel to Trinity to take on sixth-ranked Colby
College in the conference semifinals. The Jeffs, who have not
advanced to the finals since 2005 and have never won the NESCAC
title, suffered a 9-4 loss to the Mules on Apr. 17 in Waterville,
Maine. The only other meeting between Amherst and Colby in the
conference tournament came back in 2007, when the fourth-seeded
Mules defeated the sixth-seeded Jeffs in the semifinals,
10-8.
