Perfect: No. 1 Hamilton Coasts by No. 11 Union

CLINTON, N.Y. - Anne Graveley '11 scored three goals to
lead nationally ranked, No. 1 Hamilton college to a 9-5 win over
No. 11 Union College and to the 2010 Liberty League women's
lacrosse regular season title at Hamilton's Steuben Field on May
1.
Hamilton (16-0 overall, 8-0 Liberty) completed its first undefeated
regular season in program history and extended its home unbeaten
streak to 34 games. The Continentals have won three league regular
season titles in the last four years. Hamilton leads the all-time
series with Union, 25-13.
The Continentals will host the four-team league tournament on
Friday and Saturday, May 7 and 8. Hamilton takes on Rensselaer in
one semifinal and the Dutchwomen play St. Lawrence University in
the other on Friday. The championship game is scheduled for
Saturday. Times for the three games have not been announced.
Rachel Friedman '13 and Libby Schultz '12 each scored two goals.
Hilary Saverin '10 and Hannah Hoar '13 each recorded one goal and
one assist. Sarah Bray '11 earned two assists, picked up two ground
balls, won two draw controls and caused two turnovers. Bray leads
the Continentals with 38 assists.
Liz Rave '10 picked up a game-high five ground balls. Kate Fowler
'10 played all 60 minutes in goal and recorded four saves.
Union (10-6, 7-1) scored the first goal of the game 5:33 into the
first half for their only lead of the game. Back-to-back goals from
Graveley gave Hamilton a 2-1 lead at 17:14. At the 14:17 mark,
Union cut its deficit to one. Friedman found the back of the net
after a pass from Bray with 12:20 left in the opening half to five
Hamilton a 3-2 lead at the break.
Just 50 seconds into the second half, Friedman scored again this
time off an assist from Saverin. The Dutchwomen rallied scoring the
next two goals to tie the game at four.
The tie didn't last long. Hoar converted a free-position shot for
her 12th goal just 21 seconds later, and that started a 4-0
mini-run that clinched the victory for Hamilton. Schultz scored
twice during the spurt and Graveley finished it with her 31st goal
with 2:11 remaining. After one last Union goal, Saverin put an
exclamation mark on the win as she scored her 13th goal with seven
seconds left on Bray's third assist.
Hamilton outshot Union, 19-10, and enjoyed a 19-15 advantage in
ground balls. The Dutchwomen won nine draw controls, while the
Continentals won seven. Union was successful on 12 of its 19 clear
attempts, while Hamilton was successful on 13 of their 14. Union's
previous five losses were all by one goal.
