Cortland Rallies Past Union in OT

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Sophomore midfielder
Jordan Miller (Liverpool, NY) scored with 41 seconds left in the
second overtime to lift #9 Cortland to a 13-12 comeback win over
#11 Union at Frank Bailey Field Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons,
who trailed by two with 7:48 left in regulation, improved to 11-2
while the Dutchwomen fell to 7-5 and had a five game winning streak
snapped.
All five of Union's losses have come against nationally ranked
teams and each of the five have been decided by one goal. This was
the third time Union lost in overtime.
Miller took a feed from the side of the Union net from Kelly
Radigan (Fayettesville, NY) and fired home her ninth of the season
and second of the game. Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga, NY) won the
ensuing draw control and the Red Dragons ran out the clock.
Jess Fritz (Baldwinsville, NY) scored four goals for Cortland while
Nicki Mahoney (Canandaigua, NY) tallied three times. Maria Di Fato
(Camillus, NY) and Miller had two goals each to pace the Red
Dragons. Ally Levy (Reistertown, MD) made eight stops, including
five in the second half of regulation time.
Union senior Kristin Joyce scored four goals, including her 50th of
the season coming with 17:56 left in the first half. Allie Cuozzo
had two tallies and Melissa Hine (South Hadley, MA) dished out six
assists with a goal while Cat Ruggiero made 12 stops in net. She
made eight saves in the second half and one in the first OT
session.
Union led 3-0 in the first 12:04, but Cortland pulled to within two
with 11:36 left in the first half. The Dtuchwomen tallied three
straight, including two by Cuozzo, for a 6-2 lead with 7:28 left in
the first 30 minutes. But two goals by Fitz sandwiching a Radigan
goal in the final 3:13 provided the 6-5 score in Union's advantage
for the halftime.
Cortland eventually tied the game at 7-7 on DiFato's 26th of the
year with 22:32 remaining in the second. But Joyce answered from a
Hine assist with 18:30 left for the lead, only to have Miller tie
it 6:08 later. Union regained the lead with the first of the year
for Tory Arnold with 11:35 on the clock and it became 10-8 Union
with 10:13 left on a Tory Cameron score. Abbott's 32nd of the 2010
season with 8:12 left pulled the Red Dragons to within one at
10-9,b ut Joyce's 52nd with 7:48 left got it back up to two for the
Dutchwomen.
Mahoney then took over for Cortland with a goal with 5:36 left and
then tied the contest at 11-11 on a free position goal for her 22nd
with 4:15 remaining. Cortland then took the lead for the first time
in the game as Frtiz notched #24 from Radigan with 3:51 left. With
1:08 left, Becca Kriskey caused a Cortland turnover and Arnold go
the grounder. Union called timeout with 36 seconds remaining, had a
clear, and then Hine found Abby Stohler directly in front with 21
seconds left, as Stohler tied the game at 12-12.
Cortland's Abbott was provided with a free position with one second
remaining in regulation but her shot was high of the cage, sending
the game to the extra sessions.
In the second overtime, Cortland won the draw, and after a
turnover, regained the ball on a Union turnover with 1:04 left. The
Red Dragons cleared with 57 remaining and with 41 seconds
remaining, Radigan dished to Miller for the eventual game
winner.
Cortland had a 34-24 shot advantage while Union had 22 ground balls
to the Red Dragons' 19. Union was 19 for 21 on clears while
Cortland was 17 for 21. The guests converted three of 10 free
position opportunities while Union was scoreless on two free
position chances.
