No. 12 Tufts Plucks No. 4 Bantams, 11-9
from press release
HARTFORD -- Sophomore midfielder Casey Egan (Massapequa,
NY) had two goals, including the go-ahead goal, and one assist as
the visiting Tufts University Jumbos to a 11-9 victory over the
Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic
Conference (NESCAC) women's lacrosse action this afternoon on
Sheppard Field.
The Bantams, ranked #4 in the nation, drop to 8-1 overall and 5-1
in the NESCAC with their first loss of the year. The Jumbos, #12
nationally, improve to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the league with their
sixth win in a row.
The teams traded goals first 20 minutes of the game, before Tufts
took control with a four-goal spurt late in the first half and
early in the second half and held its lead to the final horn. Egan
opened the 4-0 run on a goal from sophomore attacker Lara Kozin
(Suffern, NY) with 8:38 remaining before intermission, and senior
Emily Johnson (Yarmouth, ME) scored 3:55 before the half to give
the visitors a 6-4 advantage at the break.
After two more Jumbo scores over the first 10 minutes of the second
half, freshman attacker Megan Leonhard (Summit, NJ) broke the
Bantam scoring drought with an unassisted goal with 19:46 left that
ignited a 3-0 Trinity run. Trinity junior midfielder Rachel
Romanowsky (Hampstead, NH) notched her third and fourth assists of
the game with passes to first year Kaitlin Hildebrand (Berwyn, PA)
and junior attacker Caitlin Irvine (Westwood, MA) to cut the Tufts
lead to 8-7 with 11:21 left, but Jumbo sophomore midfielder Steph
Perez (East Providence, RI) registered back-to-back tallies after
the 10-minute mark to push the Tufts lead back to three.
Hildebrand and Romanowsky scored late goals to bring Trinity back
within a goal with 3:42 remaining, but Kozin stole the ball in the
Bantam defensive area and beat Trinity sophomore goalie Gina
Dinallo (West Hartford, CT) for an insurance goal at the 2:29 mark.
Trinity won the ensuing draw with a chance to tie the game, but an
offensive foul call on the Bantams gave possession back to Tufts.
Trinity sophomore Liz Bruno (Andover, MA) stole the ball back, but
with just 10 seconds remaining the Bantams were out of time.
Johnson paced Tufts with three goals, while Kozin had a goal and
two assists, and senior co-captain Jenna Abelli (Framingham, MA)
added one goal and one assist. Junior Sara Bloom (Summit, NJ)
stopped 10 shots in the Jumbo goal.
Hildebrand and Irvine finished with three goals apiece for Trinity,
while Romanowsky had a goal and four assists, and Leonhard scored
twice for the Bantams. Bruno picked up a game-high seven ground
balls, and Dinallo made 13 saves.
