No. 9 Cortland Blows Out Potsdam in SUNYAC Opener

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Nine different players
scored goals, led by sophomore Lindsay Abbott (South
Onondaga/Onondaga Central) who tallied three scores, recorded a
career-high five assists and tied her career best with eight
points, as the nationally ninth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse
team defeated Potsdam, 19-1, Friday afternoon in the SUNYAC opener
for both schools. The Red Dragons improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0
in the conference, while the Bears fell to 3-5 and 0-1.
Senior Nicki Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) led all
players with a career-high four goals and also chipped in with an
assist for Cortland. Senior Jess Fritz (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker)
contributed three goals and an assist, freshman Maria Di Fato
(Camillus/West Genesee) had two goals and two assists, senior
Jolene Quinta (Watertown/General Brown) and freshman Taylor Harney
(Patchogue-Patchogue-Medford) each scored twice and junior Bri
Shost (Mahopac) and sophomore Erin Kollar (East Islip) added one
goal and two assists apiece. Freshman goalie Ally Levy
(Reisterstown, MD/Seton Keough) stopped six shots to earn the
win.
For Potsdam, sophomore Maribeth Simmons (Clinton, CT) scored her
sixth goal of the season. Sophomore goalie Kaci Milligan
(Liverpool/Bishop Ludden) started between the pipes and made 11
saves and allowed 14 goals in 40 minutes before giving way to
sophomore Sarah Sweeney (Spencerport), who stopped five shots and
surrendered five goals over the final 20 minutes.
The Red Dragons opened up an 11-0 lead at the half en route to
scoring the first 14 goals of the game. Mahoney scored four of the
game's first eight goals, two from the free position, as Cortland
led 8-0 less than 15 minutes into the first half. Di Fato then
netted back-to-back goals and Abbott scored her second of the game
to complete the scoring in the opening 30 minutes.
Abbott was involved in Cortland's first five goals of the second
half as Cortland opened up a 16-1 lead. Fritz scored back-to-back
goals off Abbott assists less than four minutes apart to start the
stanza, then Di Fato set up Abbott's team-high 20th goal of the
season at the 20 minute, 13 second mark for a 14-0 Cortland lead.
Simmons put the Bears on the scoreboard when she collected a
rebound and beat Levy with a low shot at 14:03. Abbott then added
two more assists on goals by Quinta and Harney. Miller, Harney and
Quinta closed out the scoring for the 19-1 final.
