TROY, N.Y. – Eight different players
tallied at least two goals, led by six points from junior Sarah
Bray, as third-ranked Hamilton College defeated Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 17-7, in the Liberty League opener for
both teams. The Continentals improve to 7-0 on the season, while
the Engineers fall to 3-3 overall.
Hamilton got things going quickly in the first half of action,
jumping out to a 3-0 lead within the first five minutes of the
contest, including the first goal by Hilary Saverin (New Canaan,
CT/The Taft School) just 58 seconds in. The Engineers finally got
on the board at 23:55 behind a tally from junior Stephanie Caouette
(Wynantskill, NY/Columbia), but the Continentals rebounded and once
again regained the three-goal advantage (4-1) as Bray (Rockville,
MD/Connelly School of the Holy) dished a pass over to Anne Graveley
(Queensbury, NY/Queesbury) for the third of her game-best six
assists on the day.
Despite trading goals mid-way through the frame, Hamilton was able
to take control in the final three minutes as Bray and Saverin, who
had a game-high three goals, scored to make it a 7-3 lead for the
visitors heading into the second half.
Freshman Shannon Maguire (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) pulled RPI to
within three (7-4) to start the second stanza, scoring on the free
position, but the Continentals recovered quickly with a pair of
goals from sophomore Libby Schultz (Troy, NY/Emma Willard School)
and Saverin to make it a 9-4 game with 24:54 left.
Rensselaer’s Alissa Peterson (Gaithersburg, MD/Quince
Orchard) was able to cut the deficit to 9-5 at 24:19, but Hamilton
went on a 4-0 run to open up a 13-5 advantage with 18:39 left in
the contest. Down 14-6 with just over 12 minutes to play, junior
Afton Marshall (Windham, NH/Salem) pulled RPI to within seven
(14-7), but the Continentals tacked on three more goals, including
two from sophomore Kate Otley (Cumberland, ME/Greely) to close out
the scoring.
In addition to Bray, who also had two goals to go along with six
assists, Hamilton saw Graveley add two goals and an assist.
Freshman Rachel Friedman (Fairfield, CT), senior Liz Rave
(Huntington, NY/Huntington Public Schools), Otley, Schultz and
sophomore Ashley Allen (South Portland, ME/Waynflete School) also
had two goals apiece.
Senior goalie Kate Fowler (Branford, CT/Wilton) made four saves in
50:29 to improve to 7-0 on the season. She was replaced in the
final 9:31 by sophomore Samantha Elie (Massapequa, NY/Farmingdale),
who made one save.
For Rensselaer, Caouette tallied a game-high three goals, while
Peterson had two goals and two assists. Marshall added a tally and
a helper for the Engineers, which saw senior Ariana Hood (Severn,
