No. 10 Stevens Rolls Alfred in Empire 8 Opener

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The No. 10 Stevens
Institute of Technology women’s lacrosse team rolled to a
19-7 win over Alfred University on Friday afternoon at De Baun
Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J in the Empire 8 opener for both
schools. Stevens, which improves to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the
Empire 8, scored nine-straight goals in the middle of the first
half to pull away from the visiting Saxons and four Ducks scored
multiple times in the decisive victory.
After Alfred took a 1-0 lead 2:12 into the contest, junior Leah
Wasserman tallied twice to give the Ducks a 2-1 lead with 25:21 to
play in the opening half. Alfred’s Abbey Schaffnit (Bemus
Point, N.Y.) tied the game at two apiece but the Ducks ran off
three-straight goals, two from senior captain Alyssa Pigott, to
take a 5-2 advantage 10 minutes into the game.
Alfred scored two in a row to take back some of the momentum, but
the Ducks responded with an offensive explosion, scoring nine
unanswered goals over a span of 7:32 to open up a 14-4 lead with
9:12 remaining in the first half. Freshman Spencer Waybright,
junior Christine Smith, Wasserman, sophomore Jenna Scheibling,
senior Katie Lalli, and junior Michelle Buonacuore all had goals in
the run. Buonacuore also had three assists.
Junior Michelle Adams (Horseheads, N.Y.) scored to halt the run at
nine and the Ducks eventually went into the locker room with a 16-6
advantage.
In the second half, Stevens outscored the Saxons (3-2 overall, 0-1
Empire 8) 3-1 with Lalli, freshman Joey Galligan, and freshman Dana
Lyons finding the back of the net.
The Ducks ended the contest with a 36-12 advantage in shots and a
21-12 edge in ground balls. The Ducks also won 16-of-28 draw
controls.
Pigott finished with five points on three goals and two assists.
She also had two draw controls, three caused turnovers, and three
ground balls. Scheibling had a goal and three assists, while
Waybright tallied four times and handed out one helper. Wasserman
netted four goals and notched two assists, while Buonacuore
finished with a goal, six assists, a team-high four ground balls,
and three caused turnovers. Lalli had two goals and junior Claire
Eudy had one. Junior Kate Cox and sophomore Ashley Carey finished
with three draw controls and a pair of ground balls. Cox and Carey
had three and two caused turnovers, respectively. Senior Kara
Borzillo had two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Adams finished with five goals for Alfred and junior goalkeeper
Kate Baughman (Rush, N.Y.) made nine saves. Freshman Meg Collins
and Shannon McFadden split the game in goal for the Ducks with
Collins earning the win. The duo combined for four saves.
Stevens will return to action on Saturday afternoon when it hosts
Empire 8 rival Utica College. First draw is scheduled for 12 p.m.
