No. 11 Babson Women Drop No. 8 Middlebury

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Senior captain Anna
Collins (Winchester, Mass.) scored five goals to lead the #11
Babson College women’s lacrosse team to a thrilling 15-13
victory #8 Middlebury College Thursday afternoon at MacDowell
Field. With the win, the Beavers improve to 7-2 overall while
the Panthers drop to 4-2.
Babson scored the first two goals of the game to take the 2-0 lead
when the Panthers answered back with two goals of their own to tie
it, 2-2 with 22:15 remaining in the period. The Beavers then went
on a 6-0 run over the next ten minutes to take a strong 8-2 lead
with 11:52 left in the half. Collins and junior Ellen McCurdy
(Weston, Mass.) each scored two goals during the stretch. The
half ended with Babson up, 11-6.
The Beavers looked to continue their momentum into the second half
when Collins scored an unassisted goal to start the period and give
Babson the six goal advantage, 12-6. The Panthers then went
on to score six of the next seven goals including four from the
team’ s leading scorer, senior Dana Heritage (Cheshire,
Conn.) who Babson kept scoreless until this point. The run
brought Middlebury to within one, 13-12 with 11:37 left in the
game. Babson senior captain Kaitlyn Pettengill (Hopkinton, Mass.)
scored an unassisted goal at 9:05 to bring the lead back to two,
14-12 but Middlebury first-year Michaela Colbert (Topsfield, Mass.)
cut the margin back to one with an unassisted goal just a minute
later. Babson held the ball for the next six minutes and then
scored an insurance goal when sophomore Trisha Babson (Duxbury,
Mass.) found junior Alyssa Hood (Newport, R.I.) in front of the
goal for a one-time into the back of the net to put the Beavers up
15-13 with 1:52 remaining in the contest. Middlebury was unable to
gain possession as the Beavers took the 15-13 win.
Along with Collin’s five goals, Ellen McCurdy, Trisha Babson,
Hood, Pettengill and first-year Jamie Spang (Kennebunk, Maine) each
added two goals apiece in the victory. Trisha Babson also chipped
in a game high three assists. Pettengill finished with a team high
four draw controls. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Macary (Woodbury,
Conn.) was brilliant in net making six saves in the win playing all
60 minutes after missing the last two games due to injury.
Middlebury was led by Heritage who finished with four goals and one
assist. She was followed by Colbert and sophomore Stephanie Gill
(Hingham, Mass.) who each tallied three goals. The Panthers also
received goals from first-year Margaret Souther (Scarsdale, N.Y.),
sophomore Elizabeth Garry (Mamaroneck, N.Y.), and senior Lindsay
Winstead (Chevy Chase, Md.). Junior midfielder Taylor Brown
(Englewood, Colo.) finished with a game high five draw controls.
Sophomore Lily Nguyen (Oakland, Calif.) went the distance in net
making five saves for Middlebury.
The Beavers return to action on Saturday when they host NEWMAC
opponent Mount Holyoke College at 1pm. Middlebury will play NESCAC
rival Colby in a 12pm match also on Saturday.
