No. 16 Cortland Outranks No. 17 Generals

LEXINGTON, Va. – Cortland State recorded 10 of its
13 goals in the first half as it claimed a 13-8 victory over
Washington and Lee in women's lacrosse action on Wednesday
afternoon at Watt Field.
W&L (4-3) recorded the first goal of the game from sophomore
attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annopolis) off an assist
from junior attacker Kate Speare (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven),
but Cortland State (1-0) responded, tallying four unanswered goals
over a span of 8:29 to assume a 4-1 lead with 17:27 remaining.
The Generals would add two more goals in the half from McKaig and
junior attacker Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's
Belfield), however the Red Dragons added six goals of their own and
took a 10-3 lead into the half.
W&L pulled to within five goals on three occasions in the
second half but could get no closer as Cortland claimed the
five-goal win.
The Generals were led by McKaig, who tallied four goals, while
Megargel and senior attacker Meredith Freeman (St. Louis,
Mo./MICDS) each added two goals. Megargel also added an assist on
the day. Junior goalkeeper Katharine Farrar (Lexington,
Va./Episcopal) played all 60:00 in net for the Generals, allowing
13 goals while recording nine saves.
The Red Dragons were paced by sophomore midfielder Lindsay Abbott
(South Onondaga, N.Y./Onondaga Central) and senior attacker Nicki
Mahoney (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy), with each
recording a hat trick and one assist. Cortland also received
two-goal performances from sophomore attacker Kelly Radigan
(Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) and first-year midfielder
Maria Di Fato (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee). First-year goalkeeper
Ally Levy (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) recorded 60:00 between
the pipes, allowing eight goals while stopping 10 shots.
The Generals return to action on Saturday as they travel to
Virginia Wesleyan for a 1:00 pm contest.
