Trapp, Lady Jeffs Confound No. 9 Jumbos
from press releases
MEDFORD, Mass. – The Amherst College women's
lacrosse team opened its 2010 season by upsetting No. 9 Tufts
University Saturday afternoon in the wind and rain at Bello Field.
Kelley Trapp '11 (Monterey, CA) had a hand in each of the Lord
Jeffs' first seven goals and finished with eight points to lead the
attack.
Amherst (1-0/1-0 NESCAC) snapped its two-game losing streak against
Tufts (0-1/0-1 NESCAC), as the Jeffs suffered an 11-9 loss to the
Jumbos in the 2009 season opener and a 14-11 setback in last year's
NESCAC Championship opening round.
In the first half, Trapp figured in every Amherst goal with one
tally and five assists as the visitors took a 6-3 lead into the
break. She then made it seven for seven by scoring Amherst's
seventh goal early in the second half. The Lord Jeffs built their
lead to 11-5 before Tufts made a late run in the final five minutes
to close the margin. The Jumbos were led by a game-high four goals
and an assist from senior Emily Johnson.
Trapp's first two assists went to first-year Wyatt Davis (Concord,
MA) as Amherst took an early 2-0 lead. After Johnson scored
unassisted for Tufts with 21:43 left in the first half, Amherst
sophomore Allie Horwitz (Woodbridge, CT) scored back-to-back
goals—both assisted by Trapp—and the visitors led 4-1
at the 15:45 mark.
Johnson scored unassisted again at 12:30, but another
Trapp-to-Horwitz goal and then Trapp's own score gave the Lord
Jeffs a 6-2 lead with 9:29 to go until halftime. First-year Kerry
Eaton scored her first collegiate goal with 2:42 on the clock to
pull Tufts within 6-3.
After Casey Egan scored the opening goal of the second half for
Tufts, Amherst ran off four straight to lead 10-4 at the 13-minute
mark. First-year Marta Randall (Monkton, MD) had a goal and an
assist during the run, as did Trapp. Johnson and Randall traded
unassisted goals and it was 11-5 Amherst as the clock wound down
under five minutes.
With greater urgency, Tufts staged a comeback. By winning draws and
striking quickly, goals by sophomore Steph Perez at 4:24 and by
Johnson at 4:13 closed the gap to 11-7. However, Tufts couldn't add
another quick tally to really put the pressure on. Egan scored her
second of the game with 2:27 remaining, but that was the last goal
of the afternoon.
Amherst sophomore goalie Lamia Harik (Rye Brook, NY) earned the
victory with eight saves. Sophomore Meredith LaRose (Cranford, NJ)
finished with three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Senior
co-captain Kathleen Scheld (Yorktown Heights, NY) won three draws
for Amherst, while senior co-captain Tyler Tory-Murphy (Sea Cliff,
NY) led the visitors with four ground balls. Amherst had a 19-13
edge in ground balls for the game.
Johnson won six draws for the Jumbos, who led the category 12-9 for
the game. Senior co-captain Jenna Abelli had three ground balls,
two draw controls, and caused two turnovers. Junior goalie Sara
Bloom stopped five shots in the Tufts goal. The Jumbos earned a
narrow 23-21 margin in shots.
The Lord Jeffs will return to action Tuesday, Mar. 16, when they
take on Manhattanville College in the West Palm Beach Spring Fling.
