No. 5 TCNJ Opens with a Bang, Beats Hawks
from press release
ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- The College of New
Jersey women’s lacrosse team hit the field running in its
2010 opener as the Lions ripped off the first seven goals as they
posted a 16-6 win at St. Mary’s College of Maryland on
Friday.
The fifth-ranked Lions are 1-0 on the season, while the Seahawks
dropped to 0-5.
While St. Mary’s had the advantage of already playing a
number of games this season, it was TCNJ that took control right
from the start. Sophomore Leigh Mitchell (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape),
who missed most of last season with an injury, made a triumphant
return to the line-up scoring the game’s first goal 36
seconds into the contest.
The Lions continued to roll from that point as sophomore Ali Jaeger
(Hampton, NJ/North Hunterdon) and Robin Deehan (Morris Plains,
NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) then scored 16 seconds apart. Those
two goals gave TCNJ a 3-0 with 3:14 expired off of the clock.
TCNJ tacked on the next four goals before St. Mary’s scored
to make it a 7-1 game, before the Lions carried an 8-2 advantage
into the half.
In the second half, the game was much closer with the Lions
outscoring the Seahawks 8-4 over the final 30 minutes.
Jaeger had a banner day with a career high 11 points and eight
goals, while adding three assists. Mitchell finished with three
goals and four assists and Deehan chipped in with two goals and two
assists. Senior Lisa Seldeen (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) added to the
victory with a pair of goals and freshman Jillian Nealon
(Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central) collected her first
collegiate goals.
TCNJ goalie Mary Waller (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) notched six
saves in the victory.
Next up for the Lions is their home opener taking on Eastern
University in a 7 p.m. start at Lions’ Stadium on Tuesday,
March 16.
