York Women Edge Montclair State
from press releases
YORK, Pa. - The revamped York College women's
lacrosse opened up the 2010 campaign in victorious fashion Saturday
afternoon with an 8-7 triumph over visiting Montclair State at the
Spartans' Kinsley Field. The Spartans used six first-half goals and
bookend scores in the second frame to notch the one-goal win.
Freshman Kimberly Wayson (Harwood, Md./Southern) put on a
tremendous offensive showing in just her first collegiate game. The
Spartan rookie led York's attaack with three goals and an assist,
while posting the game-winner with just 5:17 remaining.
The Green and White opened with an outpouring of offense in the
first stanza, beginning with a Meg Foy (Toms River, N.J./Toms River
North) tally just 1:05 into the game.
York would score five more times in the first 30 minutes, including
two by Wayson, as the squads went into the break with a 6-3 Spartan
advantage
Foy, a senior captain in 2010, stretched that lead to 7-3 with a
free position score 3:05 into the second stanza.
With the four-goal cushion, the Spartan side relaxed
ever-so-slightly allowing Montclair to embark on a gritty spurt
over a nearly 12-minute span. That run, aided by back-to-back goals
from Morgan McPhee, vanquished York's lead as the non-conference
tilt was suddenly knotted at 7-7 with 14:23 to play.
It would be a pair of rookies, however, that would provide the
late-game heroics for the Spartans. Kasie White (Glen Burnie,
Md./North County), who garnered a start in her first collegiate
contest, found a cutting Wayson with a quality pass before Wayson
hammered home York's eighth goal of the contest with 5:17
remaining.
The Spartans effectively killed off the final five minutes without
allowing the Red Hawks a single attempt on goal.
On the day, the home squad held a slight 21-20 edge in shots over
their guests as well as a 24-22 advantage in groundballs.
Aside from Wayson's exploits, Foy notched a pair of goals for the
Green and White while White, Meaghan Doak (Pylesville, Md./Harford
Tech), and Ashley Kanzler (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) each
scored. Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Evans (Bel Air,
Md./Fallston) posted a fantastic effort in her first collegiate
outing. She made six saves for the York side including several on
point-blank attempts.
For the Red Hawks, McPhee led all scorers with four goals while
Lauren Adams, Kayla Henderson, and Kristin Quigley each tallied
once.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, February 24, when the
Green and White host Capital Athletic Conference foe Stevenson in a
3:30 p.m. tilt.
