Wesley Women Hire Windett to Helm Program
from press release
Debbie Windett, a long-time respected high school coach in
Delaware, has been named the head women's lacrosse coach at Wesley
College.
"We are very exciting to get the coach who we felt was the best
person for the job," Wesley College athletic director Mike Drass
said of the hiring. "With her wealth of experience and success,
Wesley College feels she can turn the program into a contender in
the Capital Athletic Conference."
Windett inherits a team that went 7-9 last season but has not had
a winning season since 2003. The cupboard is not bare, however.
All-CAC pick Brooke Bennett (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) leads a
cast of 10 returning student-athletes, including six starters from
a team that set or tied 14 school records a year ago.
Windett comes to the Wolverines after building the program at
Caesar Rodney High School in Camden, Delaware from the ground up.
She started the program in 1998 and by 2004 had led the Riders to
an appearance in the DIAA Championship game. Windett has also
served on the DIAA Lacrosse State Tournament Committee since 1998
and took over as the chairperson in 2001. In 2008, she was named to
the National Federation of High School Sports Lacrosse Rules
Committee.
In addition to her success on the lacrosse field, Windett has also
been one of Delaware's most successful high school field hockey
coaches, winning her 300th game in 2008. She led Caesar Rodney to
the DIAA Championship game in 2004, winning her fourth Henlopen
Conference Coach of the Year Award in the process. Windett has also
served on the DIAA Field Hockey State Tournament Committee since
1980. After moving to St. Thomas More to coach field hockey in
2007, she was selected as the Diamond State Conference Coach of the
Year in 2008.
Prior to her time at Caesar Rodney, Windett served as the field
hockey coach at Sussex Central High School, where she was chosen
for the Hall of Fame in 1998. Windett was also named to the
Delaware Sports Hall of Fame and Museum Selection Committee in
2009. She is also active with the Special Olympics and the American
Heart Association.
As student-athlete, Windett was a three-sport standout in field
hockey, basketball and lacrosse at Bridgewater College in Virginia,
gaining induction into the school's Hall of Fame in 2004. A winner
of Bridgewater's Sportsmanship Award, she graduated in 1976 with a
degree in Physical Education and Driver's Education.
