SALISBURY, Md. - The top-ranked Salisbury
University women's lacrosse team outscored No. 10 Babson College
10-1 in the final 26 minutes of play Saturday to collect an 18-7
victory in the 2009 NCAA Division III tournament regional semifinal
at Sea Gull Stadium. Salisbury (18-1) advances to the regional
final where the Sea Gulls will meet up with a familiar foe in No.
11 Catholic University of America. Salisbury and Catholic met in
last year's regional final where SU won 18-7. The two teams are
also common opponents during the regular-season.
Catholic University (17-3) held off a pesky University of Mary
Washington (14-8) team 19-14 in the second regional semifinal game
on Saturday afternoon.
The Sea Gulls used a balanced attack to defeat the visiting Beavers
(15-3) as SU had 12 players record at least one point in the game.
The Sea Gulls were led by senior Robyn Bishop as the midfielder
scored four goals, one free position goal, and won four draw
controls. Fellow senior Ashleigh Gender was a valuable scoring
option as the midfielder found the back of the net three times, one
free position goal, and like Bishop won four draw controls.
Salisbury's attack unit of junior Beth Rhodey (two goals, two
assists) and sophomores Trish DiGirolomo (two goals), Logan
Bilderback (one goal, three assists) and Meagan Osipowich (one
goal, one assist) was very effective in the victory as the four
provided 12 points.
Senior Courtney Sorenson (one goal), sophomore Aileen McCausland
(one goal) and freshmen Alyssa Fowler (one goal), Amanda Holsclaw
(one goal), Allie Wheatley (one goal) and Mackenzie White (two
assists) all recorded points for Salisbury.
The Beavers came out of the gates strong and scored the first goal
four minutes in. SU responded with two quick goals before the
Beavers scored three unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead with 11
minutes left before the half. SU went on its own run as the maroon
and gold poured in five goals with the final two from Bishop to
take a 7-4 lead into the half.
Babson scored two back-to-back goals early in the second half to
pull to within two, 8-6, before Salisbury pulled away. The Sea
Gulls outscored the Beavers 11-3 in the second half.
Salisbury outshot Babson 45-26, scooped up 22 ground balls, won
16-of-26 draw controls and scored four free position goals.
Babson was led by senior attacker Lindsay Bucci as she scored two
goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah McCary recorded the loss for the
Beavers as she made 14 saves.
SU senior goalkeeper Sonja Stuart collects the win as she made
eight saves, scooped up a team-high five ground balls and caused
three turnovers.
Salisbury and Catholic met once during the regular-season as the
Sea Gulls won 21-9 on the road back on March 8.
In the Cardinals win over the Eagles, CUA's Kate Robinson scored
eight goals and added one assist to pace the Cardinal attack.
