Campbell, Colby Outgun Wesleyan, 21-15
from press releases
WATERVILLE, Maine - Amy Campbell (North Andover,
Mass.) broke a New England Small College Athletic Conference
championship record with seven goals in a game as the third-ranked
Colby College women's lacrosse team took a 21-15 win over
seventh-seeded Wesleyan University in a league opening round game
Sunday at Bill Alfond Field.
The second-seeded Mules, the defending NESCAC champions, are 14-1
overall and have won 13 straight games heading into next Saturday's
semifinal game against third-seeded Middlebury College at noon at
Tufts University. Williams College, the fifth seed, and top-seeded
Tufts play in the other game at 2:30 p.m., with the championship
game set for Sunday at noon.
The 36 goals between the two teams tied a NESCAC championship
record for total goals in a game. Colby took a 22-14 win over Tufts
in an opening round game last year.
Wesleyan, which finishes its season at 6-9, gave the Mules a battle
and cut a 12-5 halftime lead down to 18-15 with 6:23 left in the
game. The Cardinals had a golden opportunity to make it 18-16 after
Colby goaltender Keryn Meierdiercks (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) was called
for a foul and had to be positioned behind free-position shooter
Erin McCarthy (Ridgefield, Conn.) to leave a wide open net with
6:04 to play. Colby All-American defender Caroline Duke (Englewood,
Colo.) was able to get in the crease in time and get a stick on
McCarthy's hard shot to keep the score 18-15.
The Mules settled down from that point and Campbell scored two of
the next three goals in the final 3:04 of play to help Colby pull
away. Campbell had seven goals and one assist to break the old
record of six goals in a game set eight times by six different
players. Campbell herself was one of those players when she scored
six times in the Mules' opening round win over Tufts last year.
Kate Sheridan (Hingham, Mass.) added two goals and five assists for
Colby. Sheridan has 179 goals and 107 assists for 286 career points
and needs seven more assists to break Colby's all-time career
assist record of 113 set by Ally King '03.
Heather Nickerson (Falmouth, Mass.) had four goals, while Cary
Finnegan (West Hartford, Conn.) had two goals and two assists.
Caroline Atwater (Catonsville, Md.) finished with a pair of
goals.
Wesleyan got a big effort from Jess Chukwu (Evanston, Ill.), who
had six goals on seven shots. She had four of the six goals in the
second half to lead the Cardinals back into the game. Chukwu also
had five draw controls.
Maggie Lile (Wynnewood, Pa.) had three goals, while Sarah Orkin
(West Hartford, Conn.) and Erin McCarthy (Ridgefield, Conn.) both
had two goals and one assist for the Cardinals.
The Mules only had a 4-3 lead with 12:33 left in the game, but went
on an 8-2 scoring run over the final 11:42 of the half for a 12-5
lead at the break.
Wesleyan cut the lead to four goals four times in the second half
before Chukwu tallied off an assist from Allie Lynch (Greenwich,
Conn.) with 6:23 to play to cut the lead to 18-15.
