Dragon Slayers: Buff State Tops Cortland

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Buffalo St. scored the game's
final four goals and rallied for a 14-12 win versus nationally
15th-ranked Cortland in women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.
The Red Dragons fell to 10-6 overall and 7-1 in the SUNYAC, while
the Bengals earned their first-ever win against the Red Dragons and
improved to 14-1 and 8-0.
Buffalo St. also clinched the regular-season conference crown with
the victory and will host the four-team league playoff next Friday
and Saturday. Despite the setback, Cortland earned the second seed
in the tournament.
Senior Danielle Torre (Massapequa) led the Red Dragons with seven
points on five goals and two assists. Junior Jess Fritz
(Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) contributed two goals and an assist and
freshman Jordan Miller (Liverpool) scored twice. Junior Nicki
Mahoney (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy), sophomore Brianna Shost
(Mahopac) and freshman Lindsay Abbott (South Onondaga/Onondaga
Central) each scored one goal. Freshman Brianna Straut (Nanuet)
made five saves.
Katie Henderson scored seven goals for the Bengals, and Karen
Shaddock registered a game-high 10 points on two goals and eight
assists. Kendyl Clarkson added three goals. Ashley O'Brien stopped
eight shots.
Cortland opened up a 3-1 lead at the 15 minute, 54 second mark with
Torre netting all three of the Red Dragons' goals. Buffalo St. then
scored the next four goals for a 5-3 advantage before Fritz tallied
twice in the closing minutes of the first half to pull Cortland
even at 5-5.
Buffalo St. opened up an 8-7 lead 6:46 into the second half, but
Cortland went on a four-goal run to sieze back the lead, 11-8.
Henderson scored back-to-back goals and the Bengals were within
11-10 with 12:40 to play. Torre set up Shost's goal at 10:58, but
that would prove to be Cortland's last score. The Bengals closed
out the game with the last four goals, three off Henderson's stick,
to earn the 14-12 win.
