Christopher Newport Wins USA South

BURLINGTON, N.C. – Christopher
Newport’s women’s lacrosse squad defeated Greensboro in
the championship match of the USA South Tournament, 18-5, to
advance to the NCAA Tournament.
It’s the fourth straight USA South Tournament title for the
Captains and the fourth consecutive season CNU will advance to the
NCAA Tournament.
The Captains got off to a great start, scoring the first 12 goals
of the game before the Pride got on the board with 1:47 left in the
first half.
Christopher Newport maintained control in the second half,
outscoring Greensboro, 6-4.
Chrissy Rogers led all scorers with four goals. Meghan Harkey
finished with three goals and one assist and Katie Doherty added
two goals and four assists.
Shayna Sargent finished with three goals andtwo assists and Kaitlin
Quigley had two goals and one assist. Liz Klemens scored twice and
Christine Mike and Maggie Dean both added one goal for CNU.
The Captains out-shot GC, 27-16. Gayle Robinson played the first 50
minutes and had six saves in the cage while Kristen Duca finished
the game and stopped one shot.
Quigley was named the tournament’s MVP. She was joined on the
All-Tournament Team by Harkey, Rodgers, Doherty, Robinson, Kelsie
Dodd and Amy Suddarth.
Greensboro falls to 7-8 while CNU improves to 33-5. The Captains
return to action next Friday when they head to the University of
the South with start time set for 1 pm.
