Genovese 357: Herons Knock Off St. Lawrence
from press releases
CANTON, N.Y. - Junior Molly Fitzgerald and
first-year Lucy Johnson netted four goals apiece to lead the
16th-ranked William Smith lacrosse team to a 16-6 Liberty League
win over St. Lawrence today. The Herons never trailed in the
contest and broke the game open with eight unanswered goals in the
second half.
Senior Michaela Parnell and junior Sarah Goodkind notched hat
tricks for William Smith, while junior Brittany Callaghan added a
goal and an assist.
Amanda Forbes accounted for half of the Saints goals.
Parnell scored twice followed by a Goodkind tally to put the Herons
up 3-0 with 13:34 remaining in the first half. Forbes got the home
team on the board just over a minute later, but Goodkind got the
goal back to send William Smith into halftime with a 4-1 lead. All
five first half goals were scored on free-position shots.
In the second half, the Herons scored four of the first five goals
to stretch their lead to 8-2 with 21:34 remaining. St. Lawrence
countered with back-to-back goals two minutes apart to trim its
deficit to four with 18:19 to go. The mini-run prompt William Smith
Head Coach Pat Genovese to call timeout.
Whatever she said worked. Johnson scored 28 seconds later sparking
an 8-0 Heron run that bloated the team's lead to a dozen with just
over four minutes remaining.
Forbes scored twice in the final minute to close out the
scoring.
Senior goalie Becky Josefiak earned the win with 13 saves, while
Anna Marchand recorded 14 stops for St. Lawrence (4-3, 1-1).
The win was Genovese's 357th of her career, more than any other
collegiate lacrosse coach. She'll go for No. 358 at 2 p.m. on Sat.,
April 4, when the Herons square off with Clarkson.
