Roanoke Ends W&L's ODAC Dominance

SALEM, Va. -- The 12th-ranked Washington and Lee
women's lacrosse team dropped its first game to an ODAC opponent in
five seasons, falling to Roanoke College, 12-8, on Saturday
afternoon at Donald J. Kerr Stadium.
The loss snapped W&L's 48-game winning streak against ODAC foes
that dated back to a 7-6 loss to Randolph-Macon on April 10,
2004.
The Generals (6-4, 3-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 27 seconds
into the game on a goal by senior attacker Kelsi Robinson (West
Chester, Pa./Westtown) off an assist from senior midfielder Colleen
Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County).
The Maroons (7-4, 4-0) evened the score at the 27:26 mark as Gina
Valles scored off a feed from Brooks Laufman and then took a 2-1
lead on a Laufman goal off an assist from Paige Mason at 26:02. The
Generals pulled even four more times and the two teams went into
the halftime tied at 5-5.
Roanoke grabbed control of the game with three-straight tallies to
begin the second half and led 8-5 with 20:07 left in the contest.
The Generals rebounded with back-to-back goals by sophomore
midfielder Kate Donnelly (Houston, Texas/St. John's) and Evans to
make it 8-7 with 14:17 to play, but four consecutive RC goals,
including a trio by Valles, gave the Maroons a commanding 12-7 lead
with 2:06 left as they posted their first win over W&L since
the 1999 season.
Robinson and Evans led the Generals with two goals and one assist
each, while sophomore midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn
Mawr) notched two goals. Sophomore Katharine Farrar (Lexington,
Va./Episcopal) played the duration in goal and totaled nine
saves.
Valles paced Roanoke with seven goals, while Laufman posted two
goals and one assist. Mason chipped in one goal and a pair of
assists and Katlyn Scarlett registered eight saves during her 60
minutes in goal.
