Roanoke Ends W&L's ODAC Dominance

from press releases

SALEM, Va. -- The 12th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team dropped its first game to an ODAC opponent in five seasons, falling to Roanoke College, 12-8, on Saturday afternoon at Donald J. Kerr Stadium.

The loss snapped W&L's 48-game winning streak against ODAC foes that dated back to a 7-6 loss to Randolph-Macon on April 10, 2004.

The Generals (6-4, 3-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 27 seconds into the game on a goal by senior attacker Kelsi Robinson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown) off an assist from senior midfielder Colleen Evans (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County).

The Maroons (7-4, 4-0) evened the score at the 27:26 mark as Gina Valles scored off a feed from Brooks Laufman and then took a 2-1 lead on a Laufman goal off an assist from Paige Mason at 26:02. The Generals pulled even four more times and the two teams went into the halftime tied at 5-5.

Roanoke grabbed control of the game with three-straight tallies to begin the second half and led 8-5 with 20:07 left in the contest. The Generals rebounded with back-to-back goals by sophomore midfielder Kate Donnelly (Houston, Texas/St. John's) and Evans to make it 8-7 with 14:17 to play, but four consecutive RC goals, including a trio by Valles, gave the Maroons a commanding 12-7 lead with 2:06 left as they posted their first win over W&L since the 1999 season.

Robinson and Evans led the Generals with two goals and one assist each, while sophomore midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) notched two goals. Sophomore Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) played the duration in goal and totaled nine saves.

Valles paced Roanoke with seven goals, while Laufman posted two goals and one assist. Mason chipped in one goal and a pair of assists and Katlyn Scarlett registered eight saves during her 60 minutes in goal.
