Trinity Tops W&L 14-13 in OT

LEXINGTON, Va. - Trinity (Conn.) sophomore
midfielder Rachel Romanowsky (Hampstead, N.H./Derryfield) scored
the game-winning goal on a free-position shot with just 32 seconds
left in the second overtime period as the No. 11 Bantams defeated
seventh-ranked Washington and Lee, 14-13, in women's lacrosse
action on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Bantams (5-0) held a slight 5-4 edge at halftime on the
strength of three goals from Romanowsky, but the Generals responded
scoring four of the first six goals in the second stanza to take an
8-7 lead at the 18:23 mark. Trinity senior attacker Jesse Schultz
(Troy, N.Y./Emma Willard) then tied the contest, 8-8, when she made
good on a free-position shot at 17:52, however, the Generals
outscored the Bantams, 4-1 over the next 12:18 to take a 12-9 lead
with 4:04 remaining in the contest. TC then responded with
three-straight goals, including the game-tying marker with three
seconds left by sophomore attacker Caitlin Irvine (Westwood,
Mass./Hotchkins), which sent the game to extra sessions and set up
Romanowsky's heroics.
The Generals (3-3) were led by sophomore midfielder Emmy Mathews
(Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr), who tied a career-high with five goals.
Sophomore attacker Wilton Megargel (Charlottesville, Va./St.
Anne's-Belfield) also tied a career-high with three goals, while
junior attacker Britten Mathews (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) notched
two goals and one assist. Junior attacker Meredith Freeman (St.
Louis,Mo./MICDS) chipped in one goal and one assist, while senior
attacker Katie Flippen (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) and sophomore
attacker Kate Speare (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) added one goal
apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper Katharine Farrar (Lexington,
Va./Episcopal) played all 72:00 minutes and registered 15
saves.
Romanowsky's scoring efforts were supplemented by Irvine, Schultz
and junior attacker Jennifer Calver (Barnard, Vt./Holderness), who
recorded two goals each. Junior midfielder Sarah Remes (Silver
Spring, Md./National Cathedral) and senior attacker Carrie Disa
(Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug) chipped in one goal apiece.
First-year Gina Dinallo (West Hartford, Conn./William H. Hall)
played the entire duration between the pipes and recorded 10
saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as they host
Sweet Briar at 4:30 pm.
