No. 6 Gettysburg Rallies Past Wesleyan
from staff reports
HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Coming off a victory over its
first ranked opponent of the season, Wesleyan University jumped out
to a lead on sixth-ranked Gettysburg College on Monday, March 9,
and kept the score even until late in the second half when Bullets
junior Nina Emala (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) keyed a four-goal run
with two scores and an assist to help her team hold off the
Cardinals 12-8.
Wesleyan (1-1) opened 2009 with a 9-8 victory over No. 19 Bowdoin
College on Saturday and had another upset in its sights against
Gettysburg (2-0), jumping out to a quick 4-1 lead with more than 10
minutes left in the opening period. The Bullets recovered in the
final minutes of the stanza with a three-goal run, including a pair
of scores by sophomore Allegra Formento (Princeton,
N.J./Princeton), to send the teams into the break knotted 4-4.
Junior Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Old Greenwich) put
Gettysburg back in front to start the final period, starting a
see-saw battle between the two sides. Each time the Bullets found
the net, the Cardinals retaliated in kind, the last score by Erin
McCarthy tying the game at eight with just over eight minutes to
play.
After posting a goal and two assists in the first 32 minutes, Emala
took over the final eight minutes, starting with an unassisted goal
at 7:21. She then assisted on a score to junior Hollis Stahl
(Highstown, N.J./Peddie School) and tossed in another unassisted
tally before the five-minute mark. Stahl capped the scoring off a
pass from Formento with just over a minute left.
Emala, who scored seven points in Gettysburg's first victory of the
year, tossed in six points on three goals and three assists on
Monday. Stahl finished with three goals and led the Bullets with
five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Formento and junior Jessica Crane (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury)
each scored a pair of goals for Gettysburg, while Hearn tacked on
one goal and one assist. Junior Nicole Ditillo (Baldwin,
Md./Fallston) paced the Bullets' 14-8 edge off the draw with a
team-high five draw controls.
Junior goalkeeper Kristen Krammer (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) made five
saves, including four in the second half. She also scooped up two
ground balls and caused two turnovers.
