No. 1 LIU Post Escapes Bloomsburg's Upset Bid
from press release
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The top-ranked LIU Post Pioneers held off a late charge by No. 15 Bloomsburg to earn a gritty 9-7 victory over the Huskies on Sunday morning in non-conference women's lacrosse action.
The Pioneers improve to 7-0 on the season while Bloomsburg dips to 2-3 overall.
LIU Post bolted out to a 6-0 lead to open the game as senior Ashley Olen (East Islip, N.Y.) scored three of the goals and Morgan Chiarenza (Nesconset, N.Y.), Jackie Sileo (Wantagh, N.Y.) and Katie Rotan (West Islip, N.Y.) each added tallies in the first 15 minutes of play.
The game was still firmly in the Pioneers' grasp as Bloomsburg put three on the board before halftime, but the Pioneers also got markers from Samantha Losco (Smithtown, N.Y.) at 9:22 and Abbie Ross (Miller Place, N.Y.) at 0:03 to take an 8-3 lead into halftime.
But the Husky defense locked down in the second half, limiting to the Pioneers to only one goal – an unassisted marker by Olen at the 15 minute mark. The Pioneer defense matched the effort however, allowing Bloomsburg only four goals in the second to hold onto the two-goal victory.
The Pioneers were held to a season-low nine goals on 17 shots, but they still outshot Bloomsburg 17-15 and won the draw control battle by an 11-6 margin. Bloomsburg had the edge in ground balls, 17-14. Senior goalkeeper Dominique Mosca (Merrick, N.Y.) made five saves, matching BU's Sara Bates, who also stopped five shots.
Olen's four scores were a game-high, and Sileo contributed four points (1 g, 3 a). Julie Falk led Bloomsburg with three goals.
The Pioneers are off from competition for a week and a half, taking on Mercy after the Easter holiday on Wednesday, May 3 at 4 p.m.
