McCarrick, Limestone Blows Past Saint Leo
from press release
SAINT LEO, Fla. – An 11-3 score in the first half would be all No. 6 Limestone (6-1, 2-0 CC) would need as they blew past Saint Leo (3-5) 18-6 in an NCAA Division II women's lacrosse game on Wednesday, March 13.
Sophomore midfielder Sam McCarrick (Oswego, N.Y.) drilled a game-high five goals and senior midfielder Chelsea Treat (Penn Yan, N.Y.) notched four scores and an assist to lead Limestone. Junior attack Sarah Oor (Uxbridge, Canada) set up much of that offense with four assists along with two goals and senior attack Sylvia Queener (Penn Yan, N.Y.) had two goals and three assists.
Junior midfielder Katie Farrell (Brooks, Ga.) delivered three goals and five draw controls on the day and freshman midfielder Taylor Cline (Hagerstown, Md.) and senior midfielder Jessie Aguglia (Webster, N.Y.) each posted solo goals. Senior goalkeeper Rashelle McLellan (East Lyme, Conn.) played the entire 60 minutes, allowing just six goals while making seven saves to improve to 6-1 on the year.
The Saints got on the board frequently over the first eight minutes of the game as they took a 5-1 lead by the 22:19 mark before the Lions notched back-to-back goals to close to within 5-3 at 17:05. That two goal margin would not stay that way for long as Limestone erupted for six straight goals over the next 11 minutes to extend to a commanding 11-3 lead. A Saint Leo goal by Paige Leggio with 4:58 on the clock made it 11-4 and the Saints would take that seven goal advantage into the break.
Following a goal by Farrell to make it an eight goal margin, the Lions Callie Porcher notched a goal at 22:01 to cut it back to seven before four consecutive goals by Limestone dispelled any thoughts of a comeback and made it 16-5 with 15:29 to play. Saint Leo's Alix Murray would add a free position goal at 11:44 but it would lead to nothing else as the Saints closed out the 18-6 victory behind to more Farrell goals.
Cassie Miller had a goal and an assist to lead Saint Leo while Paige Leggio, Joanna Chadwick, Alix Murray, Stephanie Marran and Callie Porcher each had solo goals. Allie Sheftall posted a game-high six draw controls and Christina Minneci had an assist and game-high six groundballs. Brittany Millsap played 44:31 in goal, making two saves and allowing 16 of the 18 goals to take the loss.
Limestone continues their Florida swing as they take on rival No. 3 Rollins on Saturday, March 16. That game is set for 7 p.m. in Winter Park, Fla.
With the victory, the Saints are now 2-0 all-time against Saint Leo, having defeated the Lions 20-8 on February 26, 2012.
