No. 5 Limestone Women Throttle Belmont Abbey
from press release
GAFFNEY, S.C. – In a game that was competitive for all of 53 seconds, No. 5 Limestone (11-1, 3-0 CC) blitzed rival Belmont Abbey (4-6, 2-2 CC) 22-8 in an NCAA Division II women's lacrosse game on Saturday, March 31 at Saints Field.
Senior attack Racquel Prager (Seaford, N.Y.) torched the nets for a game-high five goals to become just the second player this season to reach 40 while sophomore attack Sarah Oor (Uxbridge, Canada) had a pair of scores and four assists to maintain her national lead in points (59) and assists (39). Junior attack Chelsea Treat (Penn Yan, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Jessica Aguanno (Delray Beach, Fla.) each delivered a hat trick and senior attacks Kelly Lalonde (Henrietta, N.Y.) and Sylvia Queener (Penn Yan, N.Y.) each had three assists.
Junior attack Ali Schumacher (Gainesville, Va.) got into the action as she came away with a pair of goals and an assist while junior midfielder Jessie Aguglia (Webster, N.Y.) finished with a goal and an assist. Senior goalkeeper Brigid Milchling (Cockeysville, Md.) was a rock in goal as she played 55:13 and allowed eight goals while making three saves to move to 10-1 on the year. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Smith (Marietta, Ga.) finished the game with a scoreless 4:47.
The Crusaders got on the board just 23 seconds into the game as Laura Dowd found Lindsay Connolly in front of the cage to make it 1-0. That, however, would be one of their few highlights as that score seemed to awaken the Limestone offense as they proceeded to rip off eight straight goals over the next 19:10 to make it 8-1. Belmont Abbey would score three of the next four goals to close to within 9-4 with 5:48 left in the half but the Saints responded with three straight scores to head to the break up 12-4.
It would get no better for BAC in the second half as Limestone maintained the offensive pressure, registering four of the first five goals of the half to stretch the lead to 16-5. They would go on to close out the game with a 6-2 run as they secured the 14-goal victory to remain undefeated in Conference Carolinas action.
Lindsay Connolly led the Crusaders with two goals and two assists to go along with three groundballs while Laura Dowd had a pair of scores, an assist, three groundballs and two draw controls. Emily Hudgins had a goal and an assist to round out the top offensive performers. Goalkeeper Tory Morgan allowed all 22 goals in 60 minutes of action, making six saves in dropping to 4-6 on the season.
Limestone heads to Misenheimer, N.C. for a first place showdown with Pfeiffer (7-5, 3-0 CC) on Thursday, April 5. The Falcons are the only other undefeated team in Conference Carolinas and were the tournament runner-up to the Saints last season. That game is slated for 4 p.m.
