No. 6 West Chester Takes Out No. 9 Rollins
from press release
WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Senior midfielder Jackie Hoover scored five goals on Senior Day as sixth-ranked West Chester University picked up a pivotal regional win over ninth-ranked Rollins College on an overcast and windy Saturday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field.
West Chester (14-3) ended its regular season with a decided victory over Rollins (11-4), who was ranked right behind the Golden Rams in the latest NCAA regional poll. West Chester came into the week ranked third in the South Region while Rollins was ranked fourth. The top three ranked teams in each region qualify for the 2011 NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Championships.
What began as an old-fashioned shootout in the first half, turned into a slow, grinding, defensive effort over the final 30 minutes. Both teams combined for 22 goals in the first half, but only four goals were scored in the second half.
West Chester used a five-goal run late in the first half to open up its largest lead of the game, 13-7. Rollins scored twice in the final 20 seconds of the first half to draw within four at the break, 13-9. When Cat Kelly scored three minutes into the second half off a free position to make it 13-10, the Tars felt like the momentum was swinging.
However, the Golden Rams limited their visitors to just one more goal the rest of the way en route to the win.
Rollins held a 14-9 advantage in draw controls in the first half, forcing West Chester into a more deliberate offensive attack in the second half to limit the Tars' opportunities.
West Chester also switched goalkeeprs with 12 minutes left in the first half, and Jess Henderson (4-0) allowed just five goals, making four saves in the process, over the next 42 minutes. Starter MacKenzie O'Keefe allowed six goals and made four saves in the first 17 minutes of the contest.
Senior Shannon Hayes enjoyed a productive Senior Day with a hat trick and five points. Claire Grimwood and Tori Dugan each tallied twice as well.
Erica Pagliarulo, Sarah Ann Showell and Anna Townsend each scored twice for Rollins. Elyse de Lisle (10-4) made nine saves in the loss.
West Chester is off until next Friday when it hosts the 2011 PSAC Tournament at Vonnie Gros Field. The Golden Rams will take on a quarterfinal round winner at 1 p.m. Friday followed by the other semifinal. The championship game is scheduled to get under way on Saturday at 1 p.m.
