Seton Hill Smokes Notre Dame (Ohio)

from press release

The Seton Hill women's lacrosse team started the 2011 campaign on Wednesday afternoon. SHU got out to quick starts in both halves as they were able to cruise to a comfortable victory 17-8. With the victory, the lady Griffins start out their season on the right foot and are 1-0 overall.

In the first half, both teams took no time in shaking out the early season rust as there were 2 quick goals within the first minute of play. Amanda Malkowski took an Ashley White pass and buried it to put SHU up 1-0. However, Notre Dame responded back 30 seconds later with a goal to tie up the contest. The Griffins went back to work offensively as they had the game's next three scores. Back-to-back goals from White made the score 3-1 SHU. Laura Hambruch then followed suit as she took a White pass and scored to increase the lead to 4-1 only 4:18 into the game. Notre Dame was resilient early and scored 2 out of the next 3 goals to cut into the Griffin advantage to 5-3. White and Hambruch had an answer of their own as they scored the next two goals to up the SHU advantage to 7-3. At the 23:52 mark, Notre Dame scored to cut the lead to 7-4. However, Seton Hill closed out the half as strong as they started it, with goals from Morgan Cain and Hambruch to head into the intermission up 9-4.

In the second half, the Griffins continued their offensive assault. Three straight goals, all within the first 5 minutes of the half put SHU up 12-3. Scoring for SHU during the stretch was Malkowski off of a Cain pass, as well as Rachel Hilbert and Cain, who both used feeds from White. Notre Dame did not go away silently however. They scored the game's next two goals to cut into the SHU lead 12-6. SHU's Rachel Hilbert, however, showed just how explosive her offensive game can be as she scored three out of the game's next four goals to help give the Griffins a comfortable 15-7 advantage. After a Notre Dame score, SHU ended the afternoon with two final scores, one more from White and Malkowski as the Griffins cruised to a 17-8 victory.

Offensively, Ashley White was tremendous for SHU. As both the Griffin facilitator, as well as a scoring threat, Ashley ended the day with 11 points (4 goals and 7 assists). Rachel Hilbert was very impressive as well notching 4 scores in the game. Morgan Cain and Laura Hambruch each registered three scores while Cain had two assists and Hambruch had one. Nadine Wallace was very active in net as she recorded 15 saves on the afternoon.

Next up, the Griffin women travel to Bloomsburg one week from today. Game time is set for 4:00 PM.
