No. 5 West Chester Needs Another Comeback
from press release
WEST CHESTER, Pa. – For the first 48
minutes of the contest, sixth-ranked West Chester played catch-up
lacrosse on its own home field. However, six unanswered goals in
the second half enabled the host Golden Rams to come from behind
and defeat PSAC East rival Bloomsburg, 13-10, and clinch the
regular-season divisional title Wednesday afternoon.
West Chester (14-0, 8-0 PSAC East) secured its second divisional
title in as many years while Bloomsburg (10-5, 5-3) continues to
battle for a second-place finish that would land it a home game in
the quarterfinals of the postseason tournament.
Alyssa Gallen scored twice during that decisive six-goal run, and
Lauren Glassey scored twice and assisted on another as West Chester
turned a 9-6 deficit into a 12-9 advantage with 8:35 remaining.
Bloomsburg’s Samantha King ended the Huskies’ scoring
drought at the 8:12 mark. However, Glassey scored her third of the
half with 2:25 left to salt away the contest. Glassey finished with
three goals and three assists to lead all scorers on the
afternoon.
Gallen and Nicole Haines each posted hat tricks for the Golden
Rams. Gallen’s tally from Shannon Hayes at the 11:35 point of
the second half gave West Chester the lead for good, 10-9.
Bloomsburg, who led 7-4 at halftime, managed just nine shots in the
final 30 minutes, picked up only four ground balls and secured just
three draw controls the entire second half as the Golden Rams
elevated their defensive effort.
King scored four goals and registered five points for the visitors.
Allie Kakareka scored four goals before leaving the contest midway
through the second half following a collision with West Chester
goalkeeper MacKenzie O’Keefe.
O’Keefe posted six saves in the win. Shelby Iezzi was
credited with 15 saves in the loss for Bloomsburg.
West Chester travels to East Stroudsburg next Wednesday for its
next game.
