from press release
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The No. 2 Lock Haven University lacrosse
team (7-0, 5-0 PSAC West) defeated No. 5 Mercyhurst College (9-1,
4-1 PSAC West) 13-9 in a battle of unbeaten Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division rivals today on
Charlotte E. Smith field.
Mercyhurst jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just over three minutes
into play, but the focused Lady Eagles countered with two goals
from sophomore Kayleigh Johnson (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport).
Johnson and Leigh Titus (Towaco, N.J./Montville) led the way for
the Lady Eagles scoring nine of LHU's 13 goals.
Johnson found the back of the net five times on the afternoon while
Titus added four goals and two assists.
Kate Smyth (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) pitched in with two goals and
one assist for the Lady Eagles.
LHU held a 5-3 advantage at the half.
Mercyhurst pulled within one goal to make it 7-6 with 16 minutes
remaining in regulation, but that's as close as they would
come.
The clash of undefeated teams was a hard fought battle on both ends
of the field and Lock Haven's intense defense played an
instrumental role in the Lady Eagles victory.
Katie Zichelli (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) and Krystalle Neighbor
(Dunellen, N.J./Rutgers Preparatory) were a dangerous duo for the
Lady Eagles defense.
Zichelli scooped up seven ground balls and caused four Mercyhurst
turnovers and fellow defender Neighbor picked up four ground balls
and had two caused turnovers.
Getting her eighth win between the pipes making three crucial saves
for LHU was senior Kira Nuttall (Baltimore/Loch Raven).
The Lady Eagles will travel to Erie, Pa. on Wednesday, April 7 to
take on No. 9 Gannon University in PSAC West action. The opening
draw is set for 4 p.m.
