Dowling Women Upend No. 7 Stonehill for First Win over Ranked
Opponent
from press release
The Dowling College women's lacrosse team continued its undefeated streak against its first nationally-ranked opponent on Friday. No. 5 Stonehill fell, 10-7, to the Golden Lions in a highly offensive battle. However, DC pulled through with better defense and superb goaltending by junior goaltender Rachel Goldstein.
"This is a tremendous win for our program and I couldn't be more proud of the all around effort of the team. We still have a lot left to accomplish and will continue to work hard to accomplish our goals moving forward." Head Coach Kerri McCabe said.
The team's undefeated streak continues to boost the confidence of the young team in its second year of existence. The Golden Lions victory derailed Stonehill own undefeated streak, pushing the Skyhawks to 2-1. Dowling led in all statistical categories; five different players scored in all for the visitors, who outshot its opponent 18-14 and held a 18-13 groundball advantage.
Just 45 seconds into the contest, sophomore Kelly Cefalu put Adelphi up on a free position shot. Michele Kelly knotted the score for the Skyhawks within the same minute. Casandra Cronin collected four of the first six DC goals in a 6-3 first half run, sophomore Brooke Witkowski assisted on two.
Seniors Stephanie Cotter along with Lauren Marra added four more points in the first fifteen minutes of the second half. The Golden Lions offense then shut down its attack and coasted to victory.
The game was completely controlled by the Golden Lions. DC was able to silence the Skyhawks, preventing Stonehill from keeping possession and making any attempt at a reply to the Golden Lion's offensive onslaught.
The Golden Lions return home to play St. Anselm College tomorrow at 7 pm.
