Florida's Sydney Pirreca Named Epoch/LM Player of the Week

from LaxMagazine.com staff reports | Twitter

For Florida women's lacrosse fans lamenting the graduation of all-time great Shannon Gilroy, freshman Sydney Pirreca sent a message Saturday.

There's plenty more where that came from.

Pirreca, like Gilroy a highly touted prospect from Long Island, scored five goals to lead Florida to a 16-15 victory over then No. 2-ranked North Carolina. Pirreca scored three goals in the first half to keep the Gators within striking distance, then put Florida ahead 9-8 with a shorthanded goal just 37 seconds into the second half.

The Tar Heels jumped back ahead, but Pirreca's sister, sophomore Shayna Pirreca, and fellow freshman star Lindsey Ronbeck combined to score the next three goals before Sydney Pirreca struck for the fifth time to give the Gators the lead for good.

It was a breakout game for the younger Pirreca, who had just one goal through Florida's first two games before carrying the Gators to 3-0.
