There were plenty of deserving candidates for the #BestOfLax upset. But in the long run, the fan vote coincided with our staff opinion - UC Davis toppling Stanford in dramatic fashion was the best of them all and earns our nod for the tops of 2013.

Going into senior night, the Aggies had just five wins in 13 tries for the season, eliminiating them from Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contention. They had never beaten a Top 20 IWLCA poll team in their history. And it had been 13 years since they had taken a win over MPSF rival Stanford, which entered the game with a 10-4 record, 5-1 in the league, good enough to rank them No. 14 in the poll at the time.

But in true nail-biting fashion, the Aggies took a narrow halftime lead, stoking hope that April 25th might be different. A second-half run made it 11-6 with 20 minutes remaining, but in the style of basically every sports movie ever, the favorites roared back to take the late lead. Things weren't over for the Aggies though. A Mary Doyle draw control led to an equalizer from Hannah Mirza to send things into overtime, where Stanford again took the lead. With 53 seconds remaining in OT, Mirza fed Meghan Jordan for the equalizer, and things looked like they'd go to another period of sudden-death play.

But with the final ticks draining off the clock, Senior attacker Elizabeth Datino crease rolled and stuck it, potting the game-winner with just 2.5 seconds in the game to cement the victory in front of the home fans.

It was a fitting finish for Datino, who ended her career with a school record 96 assists and second all time in both goals (149) and points (245), and an epic upset.

Fan Vote

The voting skewed heavily to the Aggies on this one, as they took a majority with 57% of the total vote, outpacing the second place USL U15 National Final win by 3d Select over Long Island Express by better than a 3-1 margin. Albany's Carrier Dome shocker over Syracuse was third, with Charlotte's ending of Denver's perfect MLL season in the league semifinals fourth.

UC Davis over Stanford (NCAA DI Women) - 57%
3d Select over LI Express (USL U15 Final) - 18%
Albany over Syracuse (NCAA DI Men) - 11%
Charlotte Hounds over Denver Outlaws (MLL) -  8%
Washington & Lee over Salisbury (NCAA DIII Men) -  3%
