HPU Tops Davidson, Clinches Big South Regular Season

from Press Release

The High Point University women's lacrosse team clinched the Big South regular-season title with a 15-8 win over Davidson on Sunday afternoon at Vert Stadium. It was Senior Day for the Panthers, who will host the Big South Tournament this week.

Down a goal midway through the first period, High Point responded with a 10-0 run and held the Wildcats scoreless for 30:56.

"We had to work out some kinks in the first few minutes but after the timeout we did a great job of making adjustments," said HPU head coach Lyndsey Boswell. "We played with more urgency and supported each other.

"I am extremely proud of this senior class for everything they have done for the program. They get the opportunity to host the Big South Championship now and they are excited to play together for as long as possible."

Senior Sara Kuhlman scored four goals with an assist, senior Mackenzie Carroll scored two goals with two assists and senior Alec Perry scored two goals with an assist, four draw controls and two caused turnovers. Junior goalie Julia Burns made eight saves for the Panthers.

Davidson was led by sophomore Emma Sissman, who had a hat trick in the first half, and senior Ann Fucigna, who scored a goal with three assists, also in the first half. Junior goalie Katy Boyle had five saves and two ground balls.

Davidson led 5-4 on a goal by Mary Leonard with 16:36 remaining before High Point scored four unanswered goals to finish the first half. At that point, Davidson's Sissman already had a hat trick and Fucigna had a goal and three assists.

The Panthers tied the game when junior Kendyl Gardner came around the cage and scored on a low shot with 14:24 remaining to make it 5-5. After a long defensive stand, HPU junior Katie McLaughlin caused a turnover that resulted in a score by sophomore Christina Renner. Senior Christie Dougherty passed the ball from behind the net and Renner put it in high to make it 6-5 HPU with 9:34 remaining.

Carroll gave HPU a two-goal lead on a skill shot with 4:49 remaining. She received a pass from Kuhlman and ran to her right with a Davidson defender in front of her. At a nearly impossible angle, Carroll shot the ball into the near side of the net. Kuhlman scored a free-position goal with 2:24 left in the first half to make it 8-5.

High Point continued its run as sophomore Emily Meier scored the first two goals of the second half. Kuhlman then scored two in a row and Gardner scored her second goal of the game. Senior Jasmine Jordan finished off the 10-goal run when she took the ball in from the left side for a shot with 16:28 remaining, making it 14-5.

Davidson's Erin Doherty broke the scoreless streak with a goal with 15:34 remaining in the game. The Wildcats scored three of the last four goals but the damage was done.

High Point outshot Davidson 30-15 and won ground balls 19-8. The teams each had 12 draw controls.

It was Senior Day for Patricia Bigelow, Carroll, Dougherty, Jordan, Kuhlman, Morgan Lambert, Perry, Megan Weisman and Cissy Woodyard.

High Point hosts the Big South Tournament this week with a quarterfinal game on Wednesday at 7 p.m. followed by semifinals on Friday and the championship game on Sunday at 2 p.m. High Point won the inaugural Big South Tournament last year and went on to the program's first NCAA Tourament appearance.
