Georgetown Wins Sixth Straight Game

from press release

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University women’s lacrosse team closed out the regular season with a 20-5 victory over the University of Cincinnati Bearcats (6-10, 0-6 BIG EAST) Saturday afternoon in Ohio. With the win, Georgetown improved to 8-7 overall and 5-1 in BIG EAST play. The Hoyas are the second seed in the conference championship, which will begin Thursday, May 1 at Multi-Sport Field on Georgetown’s campus.

“Cincy came out hard and played with a lot of intensity,” said Head Coach Ricky Fried. “We responded well in the second half and played with more passion and precision.”

Meghan Farrell (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Visitation), Hannah Franklin (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh School) and Reilly Woodman (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes) led the way for GU, each tallying hat tricks as 13 different Hoyas scored on the afternoon.

On defense, Maggie Brown (Woodside, Calif./Menlo School), Adrianne Devine (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) and Farrell all recorded two caused turnovers while Corinne Etchison (Eldersburg, Md./McDonogh School) managed a game-high four ground balls.

Freshman goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) took the win with three saves in 38 minutes while Barb Black (Ruxton, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) recorded 22 minutes in the cage.

Kelyn Freedman (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) started the scoring for the Hoyas off a free position goal but Cincinnati answered right back to even the score.

Franklin then scored two of the next three goals for the Hoyas with Natalie Miller recording the other tally for the Blue & Gray to take a 4-1 lead. The Bearcats would tally two of their own before an onslaught of GU goals ended the first half and extended into the second.

Kassandra Bowling (Monkton, Md./Bryn Mawr School), Woodman, Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and Farrell rounded out the GU scoring in the first half.

The squads went into the break with Georgetown leading 9-3.

Freedman scored again to open the second half on a free position goal. Franklin added one more before senior defender Adrianne Devine (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) made it 12-3 after pulling in the draw control.

Farrell made it a 10-goal game and then hit another as the Hoyas continued to roll.

Jody Cumberpatch (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) connected a free position shot before Etchison and Woodman found the back of the cage.

The Hoyas continued to keep the 10-0 run going midway through the final half. Kelsey Perselay (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), Candace Palitto (Chatham, N.J./Villa Walsh Academy) and Etchison all scored for the Blue & Gray.

At 8:56, Cincy got on the board for the first time in the second half. Georgetown’s Kate Snouffer (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) found the back of the cage with under two minutes and despite a late Bearcat tally, GU came away with the 20-5 decision.

Georgetown outshot Cincinnati, 35-11, and had 17 draw controls to the Bearcats' nine.

The second-seeded Hoyas will face the No. 3 seed in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship on Thursday evening at Multi-Sport Field. The opening draw is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. A live stream and live stats will be available through www.BIGEAST.com.
