Loyola Clinches Patriot Title With Win Over Navy

BALTIMORE - The No. 18 Loyola University Maryland women's lacrosse team won the Patriot League regular season title Saturday afternoon, defeating Navy, 11-6, in the inaugural game between the local squads on Senior Day at Ridley Athletic Complex.
With the win, the Greyhounds (12-4, 8-0 Patriot League) completed their ninth undefeated regular season conference schedule and will host next week's Patriot League Tournament semifinals and finals on Thursday and Sunday, respectively.
Junior Annie Thomas led all players with three goals and five points, while classmates Molly Hulseman and Sydney Thomas added two goals and an assist each. Juniors Kara Burke and Taryn VanThof also had two goals, while senior Marlee Paton contributed two assists and classmate Ali Habicht had one.
For Navy (14-2, 6-2), Kaitlan Moynihan had two goals and Jess Fellows, Katie Gallagher, Loren Generi and Aimee Gennaro tacked on one each.
Behind two point-blank saves by sophomore Molly Wolf, the Greyhounds' defense held Navy off the board for the first 27:37, while the offense rattled off five-straight goals for a 5-0 lead by 6:27.
Annie Thomas assisted Sydney Thomas at 27:14 to open the game and then Annie Thomas stuck a shot into the top right corner to give Loyola a 2-0 lead at 24:35. A goal from VanThof, assisted by Schmitt, put the Greyhounds up 3-0, before back-to-back goals from Burke, the second assisted by Sydney Thomas, gave Loyola its 5-0 advantage.
Navy halted the streak at 2:23, but the Greyhounds closed out the half with scores from Hulseman and VanThof to take a 7-1 advantage at the break.
Annie Thomas netted her second of the day at 21:51 and then completed her 16th career hat trick following Navy's second goal, giving Loyola a 9-2 advantage with 16:06 to play.
The Midshipmen were able to string together a three-goal run to cut their deficit to four, at 9-5, but goals from Sydney Thomas and Hulseman by 6:58 put Loyola ahead, 11-5. Navy then closed out the scoring in the game with a free-position goal at 5:53.
Paton led the defense with four ground balls, four draw controls and four caused turnovers, while senior Katie Reinhard added two ground balls and Wolf had two ground balls and two caused turnovers to go with seven saves.
