Temple Beats Big East Foe Marquette on Road
from Press Release
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's lacrosse team fell 11-7 to Temple on Thursday afternoon at a sunny Valley Fields.
Freshman Amanda Bochniak and sophomore Hayley Baas each scored a pair of goals for the Golden Eagles, while Claire Costanza, Anna Muzika and Devyn Antolini each added one goal in the loss. Sophomore goalie Sarah Priem posted nine saves in net and her counterpart Jaqi Kakalecik made five saves for Temple.
The defeat drops Marquette to 5-9 on the season, including a mark of 1-4 in BIG EAST Conference action.
Points-leader Jaymie Tabor led the Owls (6-8, 3-2 BIG EAST) with three goals and Nicole Tiernan posted two goals and an assist.
Tabor put Temple on the board first just over two minutes into the game and Kathryn Skahan gave the Owls a 2-0 lead with 20 minutes remaining in the opening half. TU was able to lead 7-3 at the half due in large part to its proficiency on the draw, where it corralled eight of 10 draw controls in the first frame.
Sophomore Maddie McTigue notched a game-high seven draw controls on the afternoon and Tabor and Kelly Syphard each had a pair. Marquette, which controlled just six draws, did not have one player with more than a single draw control.
The Golden Eagles posted the first two goals of the second half to cut their deficit to 7-5 with 25:30 remaining, but that was as close as they would get. Costanza's goal with 3:57 left pulled MU back to within a pair, 9-7, before Temple scored two goals in the last minute for the final differential.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday at 11 a.m. when they host Villanova at Hart Park in Wauwatosa, Wis., as the first game of a doubleheader with the MU men.
