Dominant Defense Leads Navy Over Colgate
from press release
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Allowing Colgate to just
three shots on net in 60 minutes, No. 19 Navy women’s
lacrosse bounced back with a decisive 13-2 win over the Raiders at
Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium Saturday. Navy has held four of
its first five Patriot League opponents to five goals or less.
“We have been playing very well on the defensive end all season long,” said head coach Cindy Timchal. “We had a bit of a hiccup against Boston University, so we used this week to go back to the basics to refine what we were doing wrong. We came out a lot more aggressive, especially when it came to diving for loose balls and using a tenacious style of on-ball defense.”
Navy (10-1, 4-1 Patriot League) blanked its third league opponent in the first half to jump out to a 9-0 lead. The Mids used a team effort to disrupt Colgate’s offense, using seven different Navy players to cause a turnover.
Senior Aimee Gennaro (Havertown, Pa.) and junior Loren Generi (Bayport, N.Y.) jump started the Navy offense in the first half, scoring the Mids first four goals in a span of 12:15. Freshman Kaitlan Moynihan (Bel Air, Md.) then took over, tallying three-straight goals to extend Navy’s lead to seven, 7-0, with 9:56 remaining in the half.
“With Colgate face-guarding Loren today, Kaitlan [Moynihan] made the best of her opportunities on the offensive end,” Timchal said on Moynihan’s five-point performance. “Being a freshman, Kaitlan started out this season as a role player, but she proved today that her game is improving.”
The Mids tacked on two more goals, including an impressive goal from freshman Morgan Young with 2:06 left in the first half, to give Navy a 9-0. Young went one-on-one with a Colgate defender atop the 8-meter arc. Young faked left, forcing the Raiders defender to fall off balance and slashed quickly inside the 8-meter to beat the goalie for her fourth goal of the season.
Colgate (4-6, 2-2 PL) responded with the first goal in the second half to cut the deficit to eight, 9-1, with 22:06 remaining in the contest.
Navy however scored four of the final five goals in the game to capture its 10th win of the season. Navy has tallied 10 wins or more in its first seven seasons at the Division I level.
Gennaro (4g, 1a) and Moynihan (3g, 2a) led the Mids offense with five points each. Generi, with three goals, recorded her eighth game of the season with three goals or more. The Bayport, N.Y native also tallied seven draw controls and two ground balls. Young, Miranda Beal and S.A. Fogleman each chipped in with a goal as well.
Junior goalkeeper Annie Foky (Charlottesville, Va.) tallied one save in the first half to improve to 10-1 on the season. Freshman Cori Caggiano (Bethesda, Md.) relieved Foky in the second half, allowing two goals and recording two ground balls.
Navy will step out of its conference schedule to play two non-conference games next week. The Mids will host San Diego State on Wednesday, April 2 and Michigan on Saturday, April 5 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
