Altomare Tops Hofstra Scorers Again in Marist Win
from press release
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Junior Brittain Altomare tallied three goals and two assists while senior Jenn Ward and freshman Tiana Parrella each added two goals to lead Hofstra to a 9-3 non-conference victory over the Marist Red Foxes at James M. Shuart Stadium Friday night.
Altomare, who led the team in scoring for the fourth time this season, had a goal and an assist in the first half and two goals and an assist in the second half as Hofstra improved to 4-2 on the season. Parrella tallied a goal in each half for the Pride to post a season-high. Ward tallied both of her goals in the second half to also record her season-high. Junior April Iannetta added two second half assists and senior Lindsay McKinnon chipped in a goal and an assist.
Not to be lost in the Pride's victory was the effort by the Pride defense, which forced 16 Marist turnovers and allowed a season-low three goals and just nine shots.
Marist had three different goal scorers as juniors Jackie DiMaria and Emily Leonard and sophomore Allison Gionta all dented the twine. Freshman goalie Abigail Witczak made eight saves in the Red Foxes goal while facing 29 Hofstra shots.
Hofstra jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Altomare scored her 10th of the year just 1:02 into the contest and McKinnon notched her fourth off a free position shot with 14:40 to play in the first half. DiMaria closed the gap to 2-1 with her eight of the year off a free-position shot 3:20 later. Hofstra senior Alexandra Mezzanotte scored her seventh of the year, off a pass from Altomare, less than four minutes later and Parrella scored her fourth, from McKinnon with 4:44 to play in the first half to give the Pride a 4-1 lead at the break. Hofstra outshot Marist, 13-5, in the first 30 minutes.
The Red Foxes came out strong in the second half, scoring two of the first three goals, as Gionta tallied her ninth of the year 20 seconds into the period and Leonard tallied her fifth with 20:37 to play – around a Ward's second goal of the year for Hofstra – to close to 5-3.
But the Pride rattled off four answered goals with Altomare completing her third hat-trick of the season on consecutive goals three minutes apart to boost the Hofstra lead to 7-3. Ward would add her second of the game and third of the year, on a pass from Altomare, with 7:34 to play, before Parrella closed out the scoring with her fifth goal of the season with 3:30 to play for the 9-3 final.
Hofstra returns to action on Sunday, March 9 when the Pride travel to Connecticut to face Quinnipiac in a 1 p.m. contest.
