Marist Takes Down Southern Cal

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Marist women's lacrosse team (2-1, 0-0 MAAC) defeated USC (0-1, 0-0 MPSF) on Friday evening, 12-10. The Red Foxes were led by senior Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) with four goals followed by junior Jackie DiMaria (Dix Hills, N.Y.) with three goals. Senior Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn.) posed two goals for Marist. Juniors Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Emily Leonard (Brookfield, Conn.) had one goal and one assist each. Junior Lexi Brannigan (Loudonville, N.Y.) rounded out scoring for Marist with a goal of her own. Sophomores Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) and Kara McHugh (Madison, Conn.) recorded one assist each.
USC opened up the game with two back to back goals to take a 2-0 lead with 26:41 left in the first half. DiMaria struck first for Marist with a goal at the 19:27 mark to pull the Red Foxes within one.
The Trojan's scored again at the 17:36 mark, followed immediately by Romano's first goal of the game to post a 3-2 score in favor of USC. USC and Marist traded goals again to give the Trojans a 4-3 lead at the 7:56 mark. Larson, assisted by McHugh, scored for Marist.
USC scored at the 6:15 mark to pull ahead by two but the Red Foxes fought back in the final four minutes, notching a goal off a free position shot by Brannigan scored off a free-position shot followed by Viscounts lone goal of the game in the final 20 seconds to tie the game at five heading into halftime.
Marist opened up the second half on the same note they ended the first half, with two consecutive goals. Romano scored her second of the game at the 25:36 mark, followed by DiMaria's second at the 23:19 mark to put the Red Foxes up 7-5.
USC scored at the 21:03 mark to pull within one of Marist. It was short lived as the Red Foxes scored four straight goals to lead the Trojans 11-6 with 13:02 left in the second half. Larson scored her second goal of the night at the 18:01 mark, assisted by Leonard. DiMaria netted her third at the 17:46 mark off a free position shot. Romano had back to back goals in a one minute span to round out the scoring, using one assist by Gionta.
USC responded with a trifecta of goals to trail Marist 11-9 with 6:16 left to play. Leonard netted her lone goal of the game at the 5:06 mark to push the Red Foxes ahead, 12-9. USC was able to squeeze one more in with eight seconds left in the game but it was to no avail as Marist defeated USC, 12-10.
The Red Foxes return to action on Sunday, Mar. 2 against Fresno State. The game is slated to begin at 4 p.m. EST.
