Pioneers Roll to 20-5 Win Against Fresno State
from Press Release
FRESNO, Calif. – University of Denver women's lacrosse senior Meredith Harris (Middleburg, Va.) tallied five goals and two assists, and senior Sonorah Vinyard (Denver, Colo.) collected 11 draw controls, leading the Pioneers to a 20-5 rout of Fresno State on Sunday afternoon.
"I am pleased with how the girls played despite our slow start," Kelly said. "Our scoring was very spread out, and our midfield play was solid."
Junior Jill Remenapp (Woodbine, Md.) had four assists to go along with a pair of goals for the Pioneers (2-0, 2-0 MPSF), and senior Jenn Etzel (Bel Air, Md.) recorded four goals and an assist. Sophomore Rachael McKinnon (Brooklin, Ontario, Canada) added four goals, and junior Rachael Dillon (Bel Air, Md.) had a goal and three assists.
The Pioneers dominated the Bulldogs, taking a 31-10 advantage in shots, including 13-1 in the second half, and led 19-7 in draw controls. Vinyard's 11 draw controls were one shy of DU's all-time record owned by Kiki Boone (Cherry Hills Village), set against Fresno State last season, and Kate Broderick, set against Oregon in 2005. It was also two draw controls shy of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation record.
Denver scored the game's first three goals before Fresno State went on a 4-1 run over the ensuing 10 minutes to tie it at 4-4. The teams exchanged the next two goals for a 5-5 tie with 8:43 left in the first half.
However, Denver scored the game's final 15 goals to roll to the victory.
The Pioneers next head to Louisville for a nonconference battle on Saturday at 11 a.m. MT.
