McCarthy's Hat Trick Helps Winthrop Edge George Mason

FAIRFAX, VA – Sophomore Logan McCarthyscored three goals and notched one assist as the Winthrop lacrosse team notched its first victory of the season Sunday, 7-6, over the George Mason Patriots.
McCarthy scored two of her goals on free-position attempts, converting both of her tries. Junior Jenna Kasmarik also added two goals, one on a free-position attempt. Hayley Krause and Abigail Blevins each added one goal as well. Camille Kingrecorded her first victory, finishing with six saves.
"Our defense really played well today and guided our victory," head coach John Sung said. "To beat an established team is definitely a positive. We just have to continue to win games and learn to win the right way."
George Mason (0-2) got on the scoreboard first less than two minutes into the contest. Winthrop got its first goal from the stick of Krause with 22:25 on the clock. The Eagles went up 3-1 after grabbing two goals in less than 90 seconds with 10:25 left in the first half.
The Patriots got back within one with less than nine minutes to go in the half before Kasmarik gave the Eagles another two-goal cushion with 5:58 left before the half. George Mason grabbed the last goal of the half with just less than five minutes to play to go into the break, down 4-3.
Coming out of the break, George Mason again struck in the first two minutes to tie the game at 4-4. Winthrop took the next two goals from McCarthy and Blevins to go up 6-4 with 17:27 left in the contest. The Patriots pulled within one with 14:44 left.
McCarthy notched her hat trick on a free-position shot with 9:05 to play to put the Eagles back up 7-5. The Patriots responded less than a minute later to get back within one, but couldn't manage anything more.
Winthrop will now take more than a week off before hosting St. Francis on Wednesday, March 5 at 4 p.m. at Eagle Field.
