from press release
TOWSON, Md. – Attackers Andi Raymond and Ashleigh Rohrback combined for 10 points to lead the No. 20 Towson University women's lacrosse team to an 11-6 win over UMBC on Wednesday afternoon in Unitas Stadium. Towson has now won two of its last three season openers.
"I think it's great to get that first game under your belt and come out and win," said Towson Head Coach Sonia LaMonica. "In the second half we stepped up and canned some more of our shots. I'm enjoying watching Andi and Ashleigh back out there, working together."
The first 10 minutes of the game proved to be a back-and-forth affair. Towson (1-0) struck for two goals early but saw UMBC (0-2) bounce back to tie the game at 2-2 with 21:54 to play in the half. Raymond scored the game's first goal, her first since the 2012 season after missing all of last year due to injury. Rohrback assisted on both of the Tiger tallies.
The Tigers went back on top, 3-2 as Raymond scored her second of the day at 11:31. However, once again the Retrievers found the answering tally as Kristen Bilney scored her third goal of the day at 9:24 to tie the game at three all.
Towson scored the final two goals of the half to take a 6-3 lead at the break. Rohrback had an unassisted goal before freshman attacker Gabby Cha scored her first career goal at 6:47.
The Tigers held a 15-4 advantage in the shot category at the intermission. Towson won five of the game's first nine draw controls.
Towson picked up where it left off to start the second half as the Tigers quickly tallied a pair of goals. Raymond completed her hat trick off an assist from Rohrback while freshman midfielder Samantha Brookhart found the back of the net for her first goal.
UMBC broke up a 4-0 run by the Tigers with a goal from Bilney at 23:26. That made it a 7-4 game and was the Retrievers' first goal in nearly 16 and a half minutes.
Towson then used a 4-0 run to break the game open and take an 11-4 lead. That run was highlighted by a beautiful goal from Rohrback. She took a pass from Raymond on the far side of the net and threw a shot over her shoulder with her back to the cage that went in. Raymond scored her fourth of the game during that run while junior attacker Taylor Moore and sophomore midfielder Breanna Hamm scored as well.
UMBC scored twice in the final five minutes of action which made the final score 11-6.
UMBC held a 16-10 advantage in shots in the second half while the Tigers finished the game with a 25-20 edge in that category. UMBC won 10 of the 19 draw controls and finished with a 10-8 advantage in saves.
Junior Kelsea Donnelly made eight saves in 55:14 minutes of action to earn the win. Sophomore Alyssa Saxon played the final 4:46 and did not make a save. Anna Barnett started for UMBC and made nine saves in the loss.
Raymond finished with four goals, one assist and three draw controls for the Tigers. Rohrback tallied two goals and three assists. Moore was the other Tiger with multiple goals in the game as she finished with two.
