Fresno State Rallies to Defeat Monmouth, 8-6

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. --- In a second half comeback, the Fresno State lacrosse team defeated Monmouth University 8-6 at Kessler Field at Monmouth Stadium on Sunday morning.
"We did a really good job of coming back after being down in the first half," said Fresno State head coach Jessica Pausewang. "It was a great team win for us, it's a testament to all of the hard work we have put in."
Fresno State (1-0) trailed Monmouth 4-1 at halftime after being outshot 12-7 in the first 30 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs then came out on fire in the second half, outscoring the Hawks 7-2 to defeat Monmouth 8-6 in their season opener.
Coming off the bench freshman Allison Poust led the Bulldogs with three goals in her college debut.
Holly Cisneros and Anjelica Fuccillo scored two goals apiece for the 'Dogs, while junior Marcy Levatino added two points off of one goal and one assist.
Senior goalkeeper Lisa Barnaba led the Bulldog defense with eight huge saves.
"Lisa in cage was the backbone of our defense, she did so many great things for us," said Pausewang. "Our defense was phenomenal, they really came together and stepped up and the fact that we held Monmouth to six goals is huge."
The Bulldogs had 15 groundballs to Hawks 14 and recorded six caused turnovers in the victory. Freshman midfielder Kyleigh Westgarth had a team-high three groundballs and two caused turnovers.
"I'm just really excited about the outcome, Monmouth is a great team and for us going forward it is just a wonderful place to start our season. I'm very happy," added Pausewang.The Bulldogs next face Wagner University (0-0) tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. PT at Hameline Field in Staten Island, N.Y.
