Buckeyes Open With 18-3 Win Over Detroit

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In the 2014 opener, the Ohio State women's lacrosse team cruised to an 18-3 victory over Detroit Friday evening at the indoor field in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. With the win the Buckeyes are now 12-7 in season openers, including an 8-2 mark in games played in Columbus.

Senior Katie Chase led the charge with four goals, while Kaila Gottlick, Jennifer Poretto andCian Dabrowski each had a pair of scores. Overall, junior Jackie Cifarelli had five points on a goal and four assists for the Buckeyes. Ohio State had 12 different members find the back of the net, notching ten goals in the first half and followed with eight scores in the final 30 minutes.

Senior Cara Facchina scored the team's first goal of the year at 21:29 when she was assisted by her sister, junior Mary Kate Facchina. Last season, Facchina was second on the team in points with 53 behind Cifarelli (65). After the Titans tied it 1-1 at 15:07, the Buckeyes went on a 9-0 run to end the first half of play. Gottlick (2), Christine Easton, Chase (3), Kelsea Ayers,Tayler Kuzma and Dabrowski each scored during the big momentum swing. Easton notched her first of the year when she collected a groundball in front of the net and fired a shot into the top right at 11:10, while Chase, a native of Woodbine, Md., scored a hat trick in a four-minute span during the run.

The Buckeyes outshot the Titans 21-3 in the first half, while collecting an 11-1 advantage in draw controls.

In the second half, junior Jennifer Porretto scored back-to-back goals for unassisted goals at 29:09 and 27:32, respectively. Cifarelli netted her first goal of the year at 23:20 following a groundball pick-up by Paulina Constant to make it a 13-2 advantage. Rainey Hodgson had a solid second half on draw controls, while also scoring her first of the year at 20:25. Chase tallied the fourth goal of the game at 17:15 followed by Mary Kate Facchina and Hallie Keselman, who joined the scoring party with goals at 12:14 and 10:47, respectively.

Erin Goodman posted all three goals for the Titans, who were outshot 39-6 in the contest. Dabrowski ended the scoring clinic when she scored her second of the game with 11 seconds remaining.

Ohio State commanded the draw count, 21-2, while both teams collected 18 groundballs. Junior goalie Tori DeScenza got the start for the Buckeyes and improved to 1-0, while sophomoreKatie Frederick also saw time in front of the net in the second half.

The Buckeyes will return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday against Winthrop in the indoor field at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. As always, admission is free.
