Lacrosse Magazine, the flagship publication of US Lacrosse, will publish weekly NCAA Division I women's rankings every Monday through championship weekend in May on LaxMagazine.com. This is the final ranking for the 2014 season.
Another season is in the books, and Maryland closes out atop the women's lacrosse world once again after winning its record 11th NCAA title, downing a tough No. 2 Syracuse squad in the finals in front of a record crowd at Towson University. Northwestern, which earned its first win over Florida at the best possible moment - in the NCAA quarterfinals, moves up to No. 3, with the Gators No. 4, ahead of Virginia, which upset defending champion North Carolina to make the semifinals and ends the year at No. 5.
Each team that earned a spot in our season-ending Top 20 played in at least the NCAA tournament's first round, and all 16 second-round entrants made the cut. The biggest movers were Duke and Louisville on the positive side - the Blue Devils surged six spots from their pre-tournament placement by toppling No. 8 seed Notre Dame to reach the quarterfinals and Louisville jumped five for toppling a Top 10 Ohio State team to reach the quarterfinals as well. The only newcomer to the rankings was Georgetown, which bested Johns Hopkins in another regular-season reversal, to make the second round. They replaced Stanford, which dropped out after falling to Duke in the first round.
