McHugh Added to Lehigh Coaching Staff

from press release

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern announced the addition of Shannon McHugh to the team's coaching staff on Thursday. McHugh wrapped up a sensational four-year career at Cornell last spring where she earned 2012 All-Ivy League honors. The four-year starting midfielder will join Redfern and associate head coach Kelley Necioglu on the Mountain Hawks' sidelines.

"We are proud to welcome Shannon to our Lehigh program," said Redfern. "She is an enthusiastic, bright young coach as well as a focused competitor. She will be a terrific role model for our student-athletes on and off the field."

McHugh, who will work extensively with Lehigh's goalkeepers and midfielders, finished her collegiate career last season by posting 20 goals and two assists while leading the Big Red with 43 draw controls. That moved her to seventh in school history for career draw controls. McHugh posted 71 career goals, earning honorable mention All-Ivy league as a junior and second team laurels as a senior. McHugh also took part in the prestigious 2012 IWLCA North-South Senior All-Star Game, like former Lehigh standout and current graduate assistant Leigh Ann Torcivia. McHugh posted an impressive 11-game goal streak as a senior.

"I am really excited to join the staff at Lehigh," said McHugh. "I want to thank Jill and Kelley for such a great opportunity. I look forward to helping the program reach its full potential. I admire the athletes for their commitment to athletics as well as academics."

Despite just graduating, McHugh owns extensive work and coaching experience. She was lacrosse office assistant at Cornell last spring where she learned recruiting software (ScoutWare), helped plan practice, order equipment and plan team travel. McHugh also contacted alumni and organized community service events.

McHugh has coaching experience at various Cornell camps while working at Penn Camp, SU Nike Cup Camp and Duke Camp in the summer of 2012. She also made her mark with the Manlius Youth Summer League from 2005 through 2008.

"As a coach, I believe I bring an experience similar to one that the current players are going through," said McHugh. "I can relate to their stresses of schoolwork and succeeding athletically. Being a midfielder myself, I bring knowledge of offense and defense and how the game has changed in the past few years on both sides of the ball."

While at Cornell, McHugh was involved in multiple fundraising projects including a dodgeball tournament benefitting MS, Breast Cancer Awareness game benefiting Finger Lakes Cancer Resource Center and Freed My Starving Children.

Prior to her collegiate experience, McHugh was a two-time First Team All-League selection at Fayetteville-Manlius High School, leading the team in groundballs, draw controls and goals as a senior. She also garnered First Team All-Central New York and U.S. Lacrosse Scholarship All-America honors her final season.
