William and Mary Closes out Season with GW Win

FAIRFAX, Va. – The William and Mary lacrosse team closed out the season with a 16-12 victory at George Mason on Sunday afternoon.
Although the first half featured five ties, the Tribe (5-11, 2-5) utilized a pair of 4-0 runs to pull away and earn the victory.
Senior Kyrstin Mackrides led W&M with six points on five goals and an assist, while junior Taelor Salmon (3g, 1a) and classmate Jenna Dougherty (3g) added four and three points, respectively. With her performance, Mackrides closed out her career ranked fifth all-time at W&M in goals (130) and eighth in points (160).
Senior Caitlin Murphy also came up big in the triumph with six draw controls, while junior goalie Colleen Nofi provided 11 saves.
The opening half was tightly contested, as Mason (5-11, 0-7) answered each of the Tribe's first five goals with one of its own. However, score by sophomore Amanda Johnson with just 0:02 remaining in the first half began a pivotal 4-0 run that helped W&M pull ahead. Mackrides, sophomore Ellen Shaffrey and Dougherty also found the cage during the stretch to put W&M ahead, 9-5, with 25:40 remaining.
Although the Patriots cut the margin to just two on a pair of occasions midway through the stanza, W&M rattled off another 4-0 run to lead 15-10 following a goal by Salmon with 7:58 to play. Mason was unable to get any closer than the final margin the rest of the way.
W&M owned a 16-13 advantage in draw controls, while both of the teams totaled 13 ground balls apiece.
Allie Hilderbrandt led the Patriots with six goals, while Rachel Obregon totaled five points (2g, 3a) and four draw controls.
