Burek Breaks Albany Record in Blitz of Bearcats
from press release
VESTAL, N.Y. – Adding to her already impressive senior resume, senior attack Rachael Burek broke the University at Albany’s single-game point’s record with 11 on four goals and seven assists in the 22-6 win over Binghamton on Saturday, April 20. The Great Danes clinch a spot in the America East Conference Tournament championship and improve to 4-1 in conference play, while the Bearcats fall to 1-4.
UAlbany’s senior duo of Jess Antelmi (6g) and Burek (4g,7a) combined for 17 points on 10 goals and seven assists. Burek with her fourth goal of the contest reached the 100-goal plateau, joining teammate Ariana Parker as the 10th Great Dane to accomplish the feat in the same season.
Binghamton (2-10, 1-4 America East) opened the game with three straight goals in a minute and 28 seconds. Casey Bulman began the charge off of a free-position opportunity, Kimberly McGeever followed and Katherine Hunsberger finished with an unassisted goal. Following two UAlbany goals two minutes later, McGeever added her second goal of the game to hold a two-goal lead, 4-2, with 21:15 left in the first half.
UAlbany (10-4, 4-1 America East) retaliated back, scoring 11 straight goals to grab a commanding 13-4 lead at the half. Nichole Eamer paced the Great Danes in the final 20 minutes, scoring all four of her goals during the run. Allie Phelan tallied all three of her unassisted goals in that span, as well.
More of the same for the Great Danes in the second half, as the senior connection of Burek to Antelmi found one another three times to extend the lead to 12, 18-6, with 17:20 remaining in the contest.
The Great Dane defense held the Bearcats scoreless for the final 17 minutes of the contest. Freshmen Whitney Corby and Taylor Giglio each added to the UAlbany total, recording their first goals of their young careers.
UAlbany held advantages in shots, 37-12, ground balls, 11-7, draw controls, 17-13 and forced 13 turnovers, while turning the ball over just four times.
UAlbany goalie Anna Berman tallied four saves on 10 chances to improve to 10-4 on the season. Binghamton goalie Kara Pafumi recorded nine saves on 31 chances to fall to 0-2 on the season.
The Great Danes, winners of four straight and six of the last seven, wrap up the regular-season against Vermont on Saturday, 27 at John Fallon Field. Seniors Antelmi and Burek will be honored as this game will be the final regular-season contest for both players at home.
